Turcotte Named Head Coach of Nipissing U Women?s Varsity Hockey Team
August 17th, 2012
Nipissing University?s new varsity women?s hockey team may not be formed yet, but it has a coach.? Darren Turcotte was named coach of the team, which will begin competing in the Ontario University Athletics league next year.? The former NHL and OHL player brings an impressive resume to the team, having most recently co-coached the Ontario Under-18 women?s team, and working as an assistant coach to the Lakers men?s hockey team from 2008-2011.? Vito Castiglione, manager of sports and recreation at Nipissing University, says he?s wanted to start up a women?s varsity hockey team at Nipissing ever since the men?s hockey team came to be.? He says Turcotte provides immediate credibility to Nipissing?s women?s hockey program, not just with his familiarity coaching at the university level, but with his demonstrated commitment to women?s hockey.? Turcotte, who calls this coaching opportunity a ?sincere honour,? says the next year will be a busy one, with many phone calls and road trips to make in order to find 24 women to make-up the 2012-2013 Lady Laker?s hockey team roster.
