Diane Ravitch lampoons education critics, calls for political ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. ??Education reformer Diane Ravitch gave a keynote speech Friday at the Save Our Schools and National Call to Action, speaking for one hour on the history of education while offering a litany of rebukes aimed at policymakers and stakeholders in toe with President Obama?s Race to the Top programs.

The former assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and noted professor of educational history spoke to an endeared audience of teachers, parent groups and community activists, who routinely interrupted Ravitch?s speech with applause, cheers and titters.

Barring no punches, she boasted news outlets have called her an adversary of Bill Gates, whose namesake foundation funds many education research projects that Save Our School organizers view as inimical to education.

During a faux-interview in which Ravitch lobbed questions at herself that she?s answered throughout her career, she spoke on the history of rhetoric on U.S. education, explaining commentators have been drumming the beat of educational crisis for a century.

?In the 1910s there was a crisis,? on student vocational training, which led to the Smith Hughes Act in 1917, Ravitch began. Another crisis was the spate of immigrant children in urban schools during the 1920s, followed by underfunding during the Great Depression. She took a pot shot at Newsweek for calling the 1950s the ?golden age? in American education, even though that decade produced the seminal scare-read Johnny Can?t Read? And What You can Do about It, which launched a national call to action for remedial learning reform. Drawing laughter, she remarked the first Soviet satellite was launched into space ?because our schools were so bad.?

She also touched on racism, high poverty and class issues coming to the fore during the explosive 1960s, adding ironically ?that was the discovery of the 1960s?there?s poverty in America,? which also drew laughter from the audience.

On contemporary issues like budget cuts and high-stakes standardized testing, Ravitch said, ?every school should have full curriculum ? music is primal. Every school should have a library and media center with a person in it,? a veiled reference to the recent trend of school districts laying off librarians.

She reiterated her opposition to merit pay for teachers, No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top measures and school vouchers. On teacher tenure, Ravitch lampooned critics who view educational work protection rules as lifetime employment?guarantees: ?[Teachers have] a?right to a hearing if someone wants to fire [them] ? it?s not so onerous ,.. it?s due process.?

Ravitch provided a handful of policy prescriptions, beginning with electing ?a whole lot of different people.? She also urged teachers, parents and activists to participate in the recall efforts underway in Ohio and Wisconsin ? two states that have aggressively curbed public sector wage protection laws and public service expenditures.

Beyond politics, she argued more medical outreach should be given to pregnant women, citing studies that link underweight newborns to higher rates of learning disabilities, a problem that affects mostly low-income mothers. Early education for all children below the age of five she also mentioned, explaining in 1990 that end goal was the top priority among education policy makers. In addition, she called for increased funding for special education and medical clinics available on all school campuses.

?These people who call themselves reformers have almost all the money and all the political power,? Ravitch said, but ?[t]hey are few, and we are many.?

As a primary spokesperson for the impassioned groups like Save our Schools, her call to political action will likely invite increased speculation teachers? unions are chiefly funding these movements. Politico ran a piece citing an unnamed source who alleges Save Our Schools is concealing the degree to which union representatives are involved in organizing the group?s efforts. The American Independent was also contacted by an individual alleging a cover-up, citing four senior union officials on the Save Our Schools executive committee who were unnamed previously.?Sabrina Stevens Shupe, a former teacher who serves as a press contact and web editor for Save our Schools, told TAI it?s to be expected unions will be involved with teacher groups.

?That?s not a smoking gun,? she said. As for the two lists, Shupe wrote in an email, ?The ?internal? list isn?t internal! It?s public.?

TAI reported Thursday less than half of the money raised by Save Our Schools came from union funds. Ms. Ravitch, the?2011 recipient of the?Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize, donated all $20,000 of her prize money to Save Our Schools and other education reform projects.

Correction: In a previous version of this story, The American Independent wrote Ms. Ravitch donated all $20,000 of her Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize money to Save Our Schools. In fact, $10,000 was given to Save Our Schools, and the remaining amount went to various other education reform projects. We regret this error.

Their fish-pond in a position to survive the winter?

Winter is a critical time for a kindergarten and should be planned with great care, walk in cold winters, the risk of your entire stock. In each region, if you want the fish to survive the winter, your pond should be at least 3 meters deep. It is best to first type of winter tend to have very difficult in areas where longer time is probably the best choice for removing the fishWinter. This can be done temporarily in a tub or pool.

Feed your fish in the summer so that they are "mass" to stop the feeding, but once the temperature drops below 50 degrees. They will then go to sleep and feed them during this time could cause digestive problems and possibly kill.

If you have a water feature like a waterfall at the lake when it runs throughout the winter as they will leave it more difficultfor water to freeze and re-introduce oxygen into the pond. If your winters are too severe for this was the introduction of a brick air bubbles and should help a little hole in the ice and oxygen.

The main thing is to try to prevent the entire surface of the pond from freezing. If your pond freezes do not break the ice as the shock waves could kill the fish. Some people suggestput a ball on the surface of the pond to a small area to remain open.

Planning for the winter and take precautions before the weather sets in order to ensure that the fish be with you again in the spring!

What Are Great Ways To Celebrate Your Anniversary? | welcome to ...

Jul 30 2011

By

Do you have a special someone in your life and are you about to celebrate a special anniversary with them? Regardless if you have been together for one year or fifty years, celebrating the day in a special and memorable way is very important. Sometimes, as much as you want to bless the one you love in a unique way, it is hard to come up with great anniversary ideas. Taking a look back through the years of your relationship is considered as one of the best ways to think of ideas.

If you simply remember the special parts about the earliest parts of your time together, then you will be surprised by how many perfect anniversary ideas you can come up with. An example would be trying to think back to the first date that the two of you shared. If so, try to recreate the date over again as a way of celebrating how far you?ve come. This kind of anniversary will be a lot easier to pull off if you are still in the same city.

Perhaps you remember the first song the two of you danced together or the first movie that you saw together. Ideas for a great anniversary can be simple, like renting that first film again or tracking down the old love song and dancing to it again. Chances are, you will bless and surprise your special someone because of your planning and the creativity you put just to make these great anniversary ideas happen.

It can be very easy to brainstorm other anniversary ideas if you just think about the things that you and the one you love enjoy doing together. A weekend getaway to an area that you both wanted to visit is what you should consider planning. Either that, or you can take your special someone on a cruise that they want to go on. Be extravagant and do everything you can afford to make sure your anniversary is special. Do you love to hike and spend time in the mountains? Perhaps the best anniversary ideas for you would include a camping trip or renting out a cabin in the mountains that you love. Looking for ways to incorporate the things that you love to do together is what you can do.

Celebrating anniversaries can be one of the best ways to keep the spark alive in your relationship. When you remember where you have been and all of the hard times that you have gotten through together it will be easy to celebrate a variety of anniversary ideas that come to your head. In the end, all that will matter is that you and the one you love get to spend quality time together and perhaps this is the most important thing to remember when you are trying to gather and narrow down anniversary ideas.

Prepare For Weather Challenges, Commissioner Advises | :::?The ...

The Rivers Commissioner

for Information and Communication, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, has called on residents in Rivers to brace for the challenges expected from global warming.

Semenitari made the call in Port Harcourt on Tuesday in a paper she presented as a guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt G.R.A.

She said that weather experts had predicted that the sea level would rise and that there would be more flooding in the state between September and October.

The commissioner also said that the state government had informed the people about the impending effects of global warming on the state.

She urged Rotarians to assist check the effects of carbon footprints from their homes and offices.

?Rotarians can play a role in this regard. They can reduce the carbon they emit from homes and offices and also plant trees to ensure a green environment.?

Semenitari said that checking global warming was a collective responsibility of the people and government.

?We have to collectively check global warming because it has affected rural life like fishing and other economic activities.

?If we do not act fast, global warming can lead to diminished food and water supply. That is why government is intervening through ensuring sustainable development in social, economic and political sectors.?

She urged Rotarians to lead the campaign for a safer environment by sensitising the people to plant trees, emit less carbon prints at homes and offices and keeping environment clean.

Technology + Politics = Facepalm

Oh, how embarrassing. Earlier this week, Elizabeth May, the leader of Canada's Green Party, took to her Twitter account and declared war on wi-fi. To think I very nearly voted for these clowns in our recent election. Lesson for my American friends: just because you find all the major parties unpalatable doesn't mean that the fringe parties aren't even worse. Meanwhile, can someone please get an environmental movement going that isn't anti-science and anti-technology? Give her credit: she did manage, with rare ability, to hit not just one but all of the "idiot politician talking about science/technology" notes: 1. Moral panic: "It is very disturbing how quickly WiFi has moved into schools as it is children who are the most vulnerable." 2. Deluded citation of long-disproven theories: "It is one prevailing theory re disappearance of pollinating insects." 3. Misleading deception that comes this close to outright lying: "The World Health Org lists EMF as a possible human carcinogen."

Former Mozambique rebel group to build barracks (AFP)

MAPUTO (AFP) ? Mozambique's official opposition party, the former rebel group Renamo, will build barracks for its demobilised soldiers to "defend democracy", its spokesman said Thursday.

"The provinces have asked the (Renamo) president to create their own barracks to defend democracy," Renamo spokesman Fernando Mazanga told AFP.

He said the first barracks will be built in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa, and in the central provinces of Sofala and Zambezia, one-time Renamo strongholds.

Mazanga said the barracks were needed to protect ordinary Mozambicans, after deadly riots in September last year left 14 dead when police fired live rounds during protests over rising food prices.

"If the government sends agents to attack people, Renamo will defend them," he said.

Renamo accuses ruling party Frelimo of violating the 1992 Rome Peace Accord that ended the southern African country's 16-year civil war, which killed some five million people and displaced millions more.

Under the agreement, a new national defence force was meant to include 15,000 soldiers from each group and divide command posts evenly, but only 5,000 Renamo fighters were incorporated, Mazanga claimed.

He accused President Armando Guebuza's administration of selectively rooting out Renamo soldiers since the leader came to power in 2005.

"From the start of Guebuza's governance Renamo-allied commanders of the national armed forces were dismissed and Renamo-allied soldiers were forcefully demobilised," he said.

Mozambique's military press office denied any forced demobilisations had occurred.

Renamo enjoyed strong support in some areas immediately after the war, but its support has since dwindled.

It claimed just 17.7 percent of the vote at the last elections in 2009, down from 37.7 percent at the first democratic polls in 1994.

Afonso Dhlakama, the party's leader since 1980, claimed 16.4 percent in the presidential race, losing out to Guebuza's 75 percent.

Caring For Elders ? 4 Key Care Options | Nursing Home ? Center for ...

Article by Hal Robertson

When you get to the point where you determine your elder needs some level of care, you need to be aware that elder care can be a moving target. Needs seldom recede, but can grow rather rapidly in some cases. As a general rule, as your elder?s frailty increases, more care will be needed. That means more care giving decisions will need to be made. When determining that your elder needs additional care, you really have 4 key options available to you.1. Allowing Your Elder To Remain In Their Own HomeInitially, your elder may be at the point where they will be able to stay in their own home. It may simply be a situation where you, a family member or outside person may need to come in on a daily or weekly basis to assist with daily chores. Without question, this is the most preferred situation by both the elder and family members alike. As with anyone else, elderly folks like being in familiar surroundings, enjoying their privacy and freedom to do whatever it is they want to do.This option can and does work ? at least initially for many families. This may require making some adjustments to your elders home so that it is easier for them to get around. Things like grab bars on toilets, hand rails around the house, removing area rugs to eliminate the risk of tripping, adding a chair lift on stairs, and other similar adjustments may be needed in order for them to remain in their home.2. Having Them Live With You Or Other Family MemberThe next phase of elder care is normally making the decision to have them move in with a family member. This can be due to a change in your elder?s condition or simply for the piece of mind of the family. You?ll know when this may be right for you when you spend most of your day worrying about your elder where it gets to the point where it?s affecting your job, or a ringing phone late at night makes your heart skip a few beats.Without a doubt, this method has its benefits to be sure. It?s a lot less expensive to care for your elder yourself than hiring someone to come into their home full time. It can also help alleviate a lot of fears you may have about them living on their own, including them not eating properly, forgetting to turn the stove off, or them taking their medication. However, it can also be the most stressful on the rest of your family. Having Mom or Dad around all the time, while requiring a level of care can be a major disruption to the normal day to day lives of everyone in the house. Depending on the family and circumstances, this situation can be a Godsend. But it can also end in disaster as well.3. Assisted LivingAs startling as it may be to hear, it?s true. Over a million elderly folks reside in assisted living facilities. This option is far different from a nursing home where constant care is provided. Assisted Living facilities do not provide any medical care. This option may be right for your elder because it provides the opportunity for them to live in a homelike group setting. This option allows for a more dignified life. They will generally have an option of having a private or shared room. Meals are generally served in a dining room setting, and other services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation and shopping assistance are normally available as well. Reminders to take medication is also a welcomed service for many. Many have a wide range of recreational opportunities, be it sightseeing trips or simple card games. If your elder is social, this can be a perfect option for all involved.Assisted Living Facilities vary greatly in terms of what they offer, quality of living, and cost.4. Nursing HomesNursing homes can be both a short term and a long term option. They may be needed for those just returning from the hospital for a surgery or other medical issue. On a long term basis, a nursing home is often the last place they will live. This option can be a very emotional one for family members to choose. Often it?s chosen as a last resort, after realizing that you can no longer provide the necessary care needed at your home. Feelings of guilt are most often associated with this option as well. All are normal feelings, but it?s important to realize that there will likely come a time where you will simply not be able to care for your elder. Not because you don?t want to, but because it?s beyond your level of expertise. If your elder is still well aware of their surroundings, but have significant physical ailments, moving them to a nursing home will likely be devastating to them. They will be losing any remaining independence that they had, so be prepared for a battle. However, nursing homes are best equipped to provide your loved one with the best possible care on a 24 hours basis. The level of quality care that the 17,000+ homes provide varies greatly, so when making the decision to move your elder into a nursing home, great care needs to be taken to ensure the facility you are moving them into is held in high regard.

Hvac repair, hvac installation - Fighting Allergies this Summer

Tweet This During the hot summer months in Texas, the health and safety of your friends and family is of highest importance. Besides keeping cool and hydrating the kids to beat the heat, controlling your summer allergies is of equal importance this summer. With the Dallas-Fort Worth area's weather conditions and high allergen content, there have been many people seen sniffling, sneezing and coughing. Spring allergy season may be over, but many people are still suffering the effects of pollen, hay fever, mold, dust mites, pet dander and other common allergens. Our Arlington TX air conditioning specialists can offer some tips on how to combat your allergies this summer, allowing you to breathe easy. From our air conditioning experts, here are a few tips to keep allergies at bay.

Change Your Air Filters It is essential that you keep your ducts clean, replace your furnace filters, and clean your ventilation ducts regularly. A clean air filter will ensure that the air you are breathing in your home is of the highest quality, eliminating dust, pollen, and other allergens that can irritate the sinuses. Some experts say a filter should be replaced once a month.

Clean Up Clutter Also of importance is keeping the clutter in your home low. Dust mites accumulate where there is plenty of clutter. It offers a surface area for dust. Keep the excess papers and trash to a minimum. If you have dust mites, wash all clothing and bed linens in hot water, and clean your carpets with a filtrated vacuum.

Dry Up Moisture Eliminating excess moisture goes a long way when it comes to the fight against allergies. If mold is your nemesis, use a dehumidifier around the home to help battle mold and keep the indoor air dry. Mold can prove itself a big problem in a home, causing trouble breathing and lung issues, an infection no family wants to have to deal with. When you shower, use the exhaust fan before, during and after.

Watch Your Pets Lastly, keep an eye on your pets. Pet dander can be tough, particularly if you have small children who love their dog or cat. If your animals are indoors, do your best to keep them off your furniture and away from where you sleep. Also, wash your hands (and your children's) frequently to prevent spread.

Don't let allergies prevent you from enjoying your day. Let our Arlington TX heating and air conditioning experts help you in any other HVAC maintenance tips that will keep you as allergy-free as possible. US presses N. Korea for 'irreversible' disarmament move (AFP)

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) ? The United States on Thursday pressed North Korea to take "concrete and irreversible" steps to give up its nuclear arsenal at talks on how to improve hostile relations.

The US State Department said the first day of the talks in New York had been "serious and businesslike". North Korea's representative also called the atmosphere "constructive".

While the United States has stressed that North Korea must make moves to scrap its nuclear weapons if six decades of tensions are to be ended, it was not clear if North Korea had made any specific demands.

The US special envoy on North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, and the North's first vice foreign minister Kim Kye-Gwan held about four-and-a-half hours of talks at the US mission to the United Nations.

"The atmosphere was good, the meeting was constructive and interesting. We exchanged views on general issues," Kim said during a break.

The US State Department said: "Today?s discussions have been serious and businesslike. We look forward to continuing our meetings tomorrow."

The department highlighted comments by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the talks are "exploratory" to determine if North Korea is ready to carry out a 2005 accord and take "concrete and irreversible steps toward denuclearization."

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in Washington that "words are not enough" and "we need action" on disarmament.

The New York talks are "a chance for us to sound out the North Koreans" and "gauge their seriousness", the spokesman said.

The US government also stressed that it was closely coordinating with South Korea and other partners in talks with the reclusive North.

The international community is anxious to see North Korea return to six-nation talks -- also including the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia -- which Pyongyang stormed out of in late 2008.

North Korea agreed in principle at the talks in 2005 to scrap its weapons program, but staged nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

The North's disclosure in November that it had a uranium enrichment plant, adding a new way to make a nuclear bomb, has added to disarmament tensions.

Clinton invited the North Korean official to New York after a meeting between nuclear envoys from North and South Korea at an Asian security forum in Bali, Indonesia last week.

The North highlighted its mistrust of US motives ahead of the talks.

At a UN debate on disarmament on Wednesday, the North's UN ambassador Sin Son Ho said a proposed US missile defense shield in Europe would spark a "new nuclear arms race" and that the United States had no "moral justifications" to lecture other countries about proliferation.

North Korea's official news agency however said in a commentary Wednesday that an agreement with the United States formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War could become a "first step" to peace on the Korean peninsula and "denuclearization."

Diplomats and experts have warned the North is unlikely to make concessions in the talks.

In a sign of the diplomatic minefield that the United States has been navigating in its dealings with North Korea, one of Bosworth's aides was seen carrying a copy of "How Enemies Become Friends," a book by Charles Kupchan, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, into the meeting.

Kupchan champions the cause of US engagement with its enemies.

"The absence of trust on both sides is at this point so significant that a kind of grand bargain (between the US and North Korea) is unlikely -- if only because it wouldn't pass muster with domestic skeptics here in the United States, particularly on Capitol Hill," Kupchan told AFP.

He suggested that interim measures such as North Korea allowing inspections of certain sites or western powers giving more assistance and economic aid to the impoverished North could help "the confidence building measures broaden into the trust needed to strike a lasting deal."

Famed fossil isn't a bird after all, analysis says (AP)

NEW YORK ? One of the world's most famous fossil creatures, widely considered the earliest known bird, is getting a rude present on the 150th birthday of its discovery: A new analysis suggests it isn't a bird at all.

Chinese scientists are proposing a change to the evolutionary family tree that boots Archaeopteryx off the "bird" branch and onto a closely related branch of birdlike dinosaurs.

Archaeopteryx (ahr-kee-AHP'-teh-rihx) was a crow-sized creature that lived about 150 million years ago. It had wings and feathers, but also quite un-birdlike traits like teeth and a bony tail. Discovered in 1861 in Germany, two years after Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species," it quickly became an icon for evolution and has remained popular since.

The Chinese scientists acknowledge they have only weak evidence to support their proposal, which hinges on including a newly recognized dinosaur.

Other experts say the change could easily be reversed by further discoveries. And while it might shake scientific understanding within the bird lineage, they said, it doesn't make much difference for some other evolutionary questions.

Archaeopteryx dwells in a section of the family tree that's been reshuffled repeatedly over the past 15 or 20 years and still remains murky. It contains the small, two-legged dinosaurs that took the first steps toward flight. Fossil discoveries have blurred the distinction between dinosaurlike birds and birdlike dinosaurs, with traits such as feathers and wishbones no longer seen as reliable guides.

"Birds have been so embedded within this group of small dinosaurs ... it's very difficult to tell who is who," said Lawrence Witmer of Ohio University, who studies early bird evolution but didn't participate in the new study.

The proposed reclassification of Archaeopteryx wouldn't change the idea that birds arose from this part of the tree, he said, but it could make scientists reevaluate what they think about evolution within the bird lineage itself.

"Much of what we've known about the early evolution of birds has in a sense been filtered through Archaeopteryx," Witmer said. "Archaeopteryx has been the touchstone... (Now) the centerpiece for many of those hypotheses may or may not be part of that lineage."

The new analysis is presented in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature by Xing Xu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, and colleagues. They compared 384 specific anatomical traits of 89 species to figure out how the animals were related. The result was a tree that grouped Archaeopteryx with deinonychosaurs, two-legged meat-eaters that are evolutionary cousins to birds.

But that result appeared only when the analysis included a previously unknown dinosaur that's similar to Archaeopteryx, which the researchers dubbed Xiaotingia zhengi. It was about the size of a chicken when it lived some 160 million years ago in the Liaoning province of China, home to many feathered dinosaurs and early birds.

Julia Clarke of the University of Texas at Austin, who did not participate in the study, said the reclassification appeared to be justified by the current data. But she emphasized the study dealt with a poorly understood section of the evolutionary tree, and that more fossil discoveries could very well shift Archaeopteryx back to the "bird" branch.

Anyway, moving it "a couple of branches" isn't a huge change, and whether it's considered a bird or not is mostly a semantic issue that doesn't greatly affect larger questions about the origin of flight, she said.

Luis Chiappe, an expert in early bird evolution at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County who wasn't part of the new study, said he doesn't think the evidence is very solid.

"I feel this needs to be reassessed by other people, and I'm sure it will be," he said.

OFA: Fed Cost-Sharing Makes RMP's More Effective | Blackburn Agri ...

OFA Executive Member Keith Currie

Farmers face risk in almost every part of their business ? from weather to market fluctuations.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture argues that?s why business risk management programs are so important for the sector.

Federation Executive member Keith Currie says they also believe cost-sharing for those programs at the federal-provincial level helps make them effective and efficient ? and targeted to regional needs.

CURRIE-Risk-1

The Federation is lobbying the province in the lead-up to the October 6th provincial election to help secure federal participation in business risk management programs.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is keeping up it?s push on the federal government to cost-share the new provincial farm risk management programs.

Federation spokesman Keith Currie says it?s time Ottawa stepped up and provided it?s traditional 60 per cent share to make those provincial programs fully-funded for Ontario farmers.

CURRIE-Risk-2

Currie argues agriculture by it?s very nature is a volatile business which needs risk management programs to be profitable.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

JULY 26 ? OFA Commentary

Reducing the risky business of farming

By Keith Currie, Executive Member, Ontario Federation of Agriculture

Agriculture by nature is a volatile business. Farmers are faced with risk in almost every part of their business from the weather to market fluctuations. That s why business risk management programs are critical to the profitability and success of all Ontario farmers.

Business risk management programs fall under agricultural programming, and are historically a shared responsibility between the provincial and federal governments. Funding for the programs are traditionally shared 60/40, with 60 per cent of program funding coming from the federal government and 40 per cent from each province. This cost-sharing approach allows agricultural programs to be effectively and efficiently delivered and targeted to regional agricultural needs. Because while all farmers face similar challenges across Canada, provincial business risk management programs accommodate regional issues and circumstances.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is lobbying the provincial government in the lead up to the October 6 provincial election to work with us to help secure federal participation in agricultural business risk management programs.

The Ontario government has already shown great leadership by accepting and committing to provide 40 per cent funding for the recently announced Risk Management Program. Now is the time for the federal government to step up and commit to provide its 60 per cent share to make risk management a fully-funded program available to Ontario farmers. The Risk Management Program promises to be an effective tool for Ontario farmers to reduce farm market price volatility and stabilize on-farm income. And we need federal support to be able to deliver a stronger, more sustainable program.

The Ontario Federation of Agriculture has been a strong advocate for programs designed specifically for Ontario s agricultural sector. In fact, OFA worked with Ontario s agricultural industry to design the Risk Management Program to help mitigate the unpredictable nature of commodity markets.

The OFA, together with the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, is working to build a stronger Canadian agricultural economy. Risk is not something we ll ever eliminate in agriculture, but a fully-funded national program will provide an effective business tool for Ontario farmers.

HK utility buys stake in China nuke plant for $11B (AP)

HONG KONG ? Hong Kong utility CLP Holdings Ltd. said Monday it has bought a 17 percent stake in a nuclear power plant in southern China for 70 billion renminbi ($11 billion).

CLP said its nuclear investment unit signed a deal with China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company Ltd. to buy the stake in the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station.

Construction started in 2008 on the 6,000 megawatt plant in western Guangdong province, which consists of six 1,000 megawatt pressurized water reactors. The plant, which is 220 kilometers west of Hong Kong, is expected to be completed in phases from 2013 to 2017. The electricity produced will be sold locally.

The two companies already operate the coastal Daya Bay nuclear plant, which is also in Guangdong and sends most of its power to Hong Kong.

Beijing is promoting alternative energy sources such as nuclear, wind and solar to curb surging demand for imported oil and gas and to reduce environmental damage from heavy reliance on coal.

However, government officials signaled that the country's nuclear policy would stress safety over rapid development following Japan's devastating nuclear crisis, which was sparked by a huge tsunami in March that damaged a coastal power plant.

CLP sought to allay safety fears about the new plant, saying it "carefully assessed" safety standards of the design, construction and operational planning to make sure they comply with regulations.

The power plant will also follow "safety enhancement measures for withstanding extreme multiple natural disasters and strengthening capability for emergency preparedness," CLP said.

China's nuclear regulators said in June safety reviews of 28 reactors under construction should be completed by October. Thirteen operating plants were checked and given clean bills of health.

Review: ?Glow,? Amy Kathleen Ryan

This post has been sorted into "Uncategorized" ?

Title: Glow (Sky Chasers #1)
Author: Amy Kathleen Ryan
Published: October, 2011 by Pan Macmillan
Thanks: Pan Macmillan, AU
Pages: 307
My Rating: ★★☆☆☆?
Purchase: The Book Depository

A ship heading for New Earth is halfway through its incredible journey across the galaxy. On board, sixteen-year-olds Waverly and Kieran are part of the first generation born in space.

They are in love. They believe their future is written in the stars. They have never seen a stranger before?

? until the day they are wrenched apart and suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives.

Final Thoughts: I drew a lot of comparisons between Glow and Across the Universe by Beth Revis. Though this book has some strong points and good moments, I would recommend the latter by Beth Revis if you only had to pick one sci-fi YA series to read. Glow fell short in a lot of ways and apart from one character I felt oddly unattached to anyone or anything during my reading experience.

First of all, I have to say that this is a dual-narrative. We hear from both Waverly and Kieran and their vastly different experiences aboard the Empyrean and the New Horizon. The voice changes about every five or so chapters and I guess it was necessary for the reader to engage in each scenario, but I definitely enjoyed Waverly?s portions of the book moreso than Kieran?s.

I won?t beat around the bush ? I really disliked Kieran and found the relationship between him and Waverly to be seriously lacking. The book promotes the romance between the two, even saying on the front cover of my copy: ?Her heart will determine the future?, but I found little that actually tied them together. The two had no chemistry and their ?relationship? took a backseat to the dangers and adventures described in Glow. I couldn?t help but wonder why a seriously strong character like Waverly saw anything in Kieran. She herself even wondered at times ? especially toward the end, and I don?t blame her. I definitely didn?t want the two to end up together.

Let?s talk about Waverly. She was the only character (other than Samantha ? I liked her, too) that I felt I connected with in some way. Everyone else annoyed me to no end, or felt like they served no purpose, but Waverly was something special. Perhaps the only reason I enjoyed Glow in the slightest was because of her. I really admired her strength and courage, and her determination not to back down and give-up when she knew something was wrong. I?m not sure I could have even finished the book without her.

I?m not a huge science fiction fan, so when space ships and whacky contraptions and gadgets come into the mix I?m usually wondering whether I should even bother or not. With Glow, I found myself struggling. At the start of the year I read Across the Universe by Beth Revis and was astounded how fun sci-fi could be, and how UN-BORING it could be to read! Unfortunately Glow reminded me of my initial hesitations in delving into the sci-fi.

There wasn?t exactly anything WRONG with the book, it?s just that it wasn?t for ME. I?m sure lots of people will jump in and enjoy it, but personally it felt a little too detached for my liking. There wasn?t any relationships I was cheering on, and things just kept taking a turn for the worst plot-wise? I didn?t see any conceivable solution for the characters, so I almost gave up right then and there. When things happened to people (particularly Kieran) I found myself not caring much, so pages were left unturned until I could pluck up the courage to open the book again.

Glow is the first in a new series, but I don?t think I?ll be reading the rest. Sure I want to know ?what happens next?, but I?m not too invested that I?ll stick it out through another book or two. I?ll probably just satisfy my curiosity by reading some reviews or spoilers when the time comes.

Recommended to: People who won?t draw comparisons between Across the Universe and Glow will probably enjoy it more than I did.

Sprint details Q4 CDMA Direct Connect launch plans and handsets, quietly waves goodbye to iDEN

We're guessing that this isn't the riveting Q4 announcement that Dan Hesse promised us last week at Sprint's Kansas headquarters, but it's a shock to the system nonetheless. The outfit's legacy iDEN network is still kicking around (and in turn, eating up valuable resources to run it), and while we're told that those push-to-talk users are some of the most loyal, it looks as if 2012 will be the year they're forced to try something new. The company's CDMA-based Direct Connect alternative is officially slated to launch this winter, with those who buy in treated to triple the square miles of the company's current push-to-talk coverage area, broadband capabilities and a smattering of new devices.

The Kyocera DuraMax and DuraCore will be joined by an unannounced Motorola smartphone, all of which should be rugged enough to handle the expected field work. Furthermore, Sprint will be adding international push-to-talk (alongside "additional capabilities") in early 2012, and users should see a marked improvement in in-building coverage. Finally, we're told that voice and data capacity is expected to increase significantly as Sprint leverages its spectrum holdings in 800MHz, 1.9GHz, and -- through its relationship with Clearwire -- 2.5GHz. And with that, we'd say your iDEN handset stash just became quite the collector's item. Full details are tucked away in the PR just past the break.

travel and leisure ? Helpful Ideas to Have An Enjoyable Family ...

family vacations

Vacations can spell enjoyment and stress at the same time. The time of planning, booking and hazards of trips are just few troubles one may encounter along the way. Nevertheless, one should consider enjoying and the fun side of it rather than divulge on the pressure that can ruin all the plans and preparation.

Family vacation requires a lot of preparation considering that you should satisfy your own desires and likes alongside the wants of your toddlers, teens and spouse. Consolidating the ideas they have and the thrills they want to gain are various points that should be dealt upon for a vacation to be fruitful.

Here are some ideas you can consider when planning to go on a family vacation:

1.Why not go on a beach vacation? It is not easy to please all members of the family and resorts can be a good option. There are beaches where multitude of activities can be done like jet skiing, surfing, and cruising which you and your teens can enjoy. There are also resorts with kids? pools and slides for your toddlers. Prioritize the enjoyment of the family but check on the safety of the place and the water specifically.

2.The family can also go on a cruise vacation. You can free yourself from planning and other activities because there are packages provided by ships and other cruise lines. All you have to do is choose among the packages and be present on the set date of your floating vacation. Cruise activities include spas, casinos and live entertainment for teens and adults. Youngsters are offered with kids? activities so nobody is left bored and idle. Check on the medical facilities of the cruise lines to ensure your health while on the cruise.

]]>

3.If your family enjoys a country lifestyle, you can have a family ranch vacation. There are ranches which welcome people and offer vacation packages. There are those which are near rivers where you can do rafting and engage in a river trip. The family can also involve in ranch tour, join lessons about horseback riding and take care of horses and other animals such as cattle. A special set of activities for children are designed to get them busy while on the ranch.

4.Adventure vacation is not a bad idea either. Adventures suck as kayaking, sailing, hiking, canoeing, camping, hunting and a whole lot more can excite all the members of the family. Nature tripping is a good adventure to give you and your family fun and learning at the same time.

5.Theme parks can also be a good choice. You can choose Universal Studios which offer an array of incredible rides and attractions. Universal Studios is a theme park and movie studio in one. You can also tour and watch real working films and scenes from your much loved movies. Walt Disney also offers an Animal Kingdom Theme Park and a lot more. Children and adults alike can also enjoy the Disney resorts and other wonderful areas in the Walt Disney.

6.For holiday season, the family can try a snow vacation. Snow can make your vacation a lot different! There are numerous resorts in California, New Hampshire or Vermont which offers country skiing, dog sledding, ice fishing, ice skating, sliding, ice climbing and other exciting activities. There are also schools accepting enrollees for ski lessons; or you can simply enjoy the snow by making snow man, angels, etc.

7.Volunteer vacations. Your family can try the unique but worthwhile volunteer work with helpful humanitarian and nature causes. There are global volunteer works which cater to those groups who wanted to engage in charitable projects. There are those located in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, Africa, and much much more. Projects vary from animal welfare, health and safety, education, community development, children?s issue, environment and nature or poverty. Be sure that family members all compromised with this kind of vacation because laborious work and sacrifice are involved here rather than relaxation.

There are several more ideas one family can think of while planning for their much awaited vacation. One family member differs with another so careful compromises and decision must be made to make sure that all will be satisfied and happy. A good vacation does not depend on its longevity; rather the measure is the quality of time spent with the family.

Laser Pitch Detection system turns your axe into a luminous, latency-free MIDI machine (video)

Laser Pitch Detection System
Here's a fact you should remember about lasers: they make everything better. Even musical instruments. Anyone who has ever tried to use their trusty six-string as a MIDI controller knows the pain of the latency introduced by trying to convert string vibrations into digital signals. M3i's Laser Pitch Detection (LPD) system skirts this issue by running a laser beam under each string. Instead of detecting vibrations the optical pickup measures the distance between the diode and the depressed string, then converts that into a pitch. That not only means there's no delay, but also that no need to actually tune your instrument -- it combines all the laziness of Antares' ATG-6 with the class of Beamz. If you're curious, there's a demo video after the break.
