According to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, the U.S. Department of Labor recognizes hand injuries as one of the most common, but preventable, injuries in people of working age. Those and those familiar with teaching Yoga will surely agree. many new students have pre-existing hand or wrist pain long before they ever started practicing Yoga. the hands and wrists, made up of relatively small joints with many muscles, tendons and nerves, are a delicate area.
They control fine motor skills, and at the same time, are strong enough to bear a person?s entire body weight. Too many practices are ended early because of discomfort in the hands and wrists. Thankfully, there are exercises to help with strained wrists and sore hands. there are also props to alleviate straining altogether and alternative positions to try that are less likely to cause pain.
First, consider props that can help distribute the weight more evenly along the arm and spare the wrist. A new prop that is getting excellent reviews is the Three Minute Egg, a rounded, egg-shaped foam block that takes the place of traditional square blocks or wedges.
Assuming some wrist pain is already present, the following are some simple stretches that can help.
Therapeutic Yoga for Wrists and Hands
Handcuffs: Circle each wrist with the opposite thumb and forefinger and squeeze firmly for 3-5 seconds.
Wrist rotations: Hold the hands palm out flat and circle the wrists clockwise and counter clockwise.
Prayer pose, with both hands together in namaste position. Exert gentle pressure pushing the hands together, then lean them back towards the wrists: first the left hand pushing the right back to a 45 degree angle, then right pushing left back.
Reverse Prayer: Behind your back, put your hands together in Namaste mudra, with your fingers pointing down instead of up. Hold for 20 seconds, or so, as long as it is comfortable.
Backward wrists: On all fours, rotate your hands until fingers are pointing towards you, with forearms facing the front and gently lean back. Go slowly and pay attention to any pain in the muscles, as this stretch can be quite intense.
Wrist Safety and Pain Prevention in Yoga Class
To prevent hand and wrist pain altogether during practice, modify hand positions during Yoga sessions. in Downward Facing Dog, or Adho Mukha Svanasana, keeping the hands flat and pushing back is responsible for a great deal of soreness. Bending the fingers of the hands at the top joint, so the middle knuckles stick up rather than lie flat, is an excellent modification that strengthens the forearms and keeps pressure off wrists. in Upward Facing Dog, or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, keeping the hands closed in fists protects the wrists. many other Yoga poses can be modified by using the forearms to bear the weight ? rather than using the hands.
Additionally, chairs, low stools, blankets, and bolsters can be used to modify postures, which put too much pressure on the wrists. It may be necessary to take a rest from arm balances entirely if pain is recurrent. Remember that Yoga works with your body, not against it and honor its need for recovery.

The battle of the tech giants continues with another volley of lawsuits.
This round has computer and gadget powerhouse Apple filing a lawsuit in South Korea, claiming Samsung has infringed upon several patents over smartphone and tablet devices, Reuters is reporting.
The litigation comes as Samsung filed patent suits in South Korea, Japan and Germany in April over the US company?s iPhone and iPad after Apple claimed Samsung?s Galaxy line ?slavishly? copied its products.
?We have filed a lawsuit against Samsung with the Seoul Central District Court,? Steve Park, a spokesman for Apple Korea, told Dow Jones Newswires.
Apple Korea said in a statement it was ?no coincidence that Samsung?s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging, AFP reports.
?This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple?s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas,? it said.
In April, Apple filed suit against Samsung in San Francisco claiming the Korean firm copied its smartphones and tablet computers. Samsung responded with a lawsuit in Seoul alleging five patent infringements by Apple. Samsung filed separate actions in Tokyo, citing two patent infringements, and in the German city of Mannheim citing three.
Samsung?s Galaxy Tab has been a best-selling rival to the iPad, which has dominated the growing market for the touchscreen devices.
Despite their prickly competition in finished products, the two firms have a close business relationship. Apple was Samsung?s second-largest client in 2010 after Japan?s Sony Corp., accounting for four percent of the South Korean firm?s $142 billion annual revenue.

BEIJING ? Artist Ai Weiwei, the most high-profile target of a sweeping crackdown on activists in China, has returned home after nearly three months in detention. Looking tired and thinner, he said the conditions of his release meant he could not talk more.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Ai confessed to tax evasion, accusations his family had long denied and which activists had denounced as a false premise for detaining him. He has spoken out strongly against the ruling Communist Party, and his family and supporters say he was being punished for speaking out about the communist leadership and social problems.
Ai, who had been taken away on April 3, walked through the gate of his suburban home studio late Wednesday with his mother and wife. He said his health was fine and thanked reporters for their support outside his studio, but said he could not speak further.
"I'm sorry I can't (talk), I am on probation, please understand," Ai said, speaking in English.
Ai appeared briefly in front of his home early Thursday morning, telling reporters he was fine but had not slept.
Ai is among China's most internationally known artists and had a hand in designing Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest Olympic stadium before souring on the event. His fame has soared in recent years, both for his groundbreaking art and his bold irreverence toward authority.
His detention sparked an international outcry, with the United States and other countries saying it was a sign of China's deteriorating human rights situation.
That international condemnation, along with Ai's party connections as the son of one of China's most famous modern poets, had convinced authorities to strike a deal with Ai on his release, said Jerome Cohen, a top expert on Chinese law at New York University.
"As often happens with sensitive cases, it was too hot to handle and they had to find a way out," Cohen said from New York City.
He said Ai was most likely released on a form of bail that restricts suspects' movements to their home city for one year. However, authorities can reopen the case at any time, meaning Ai faces the ever-present threat of being detained again on the same accusations. The investigation can also be dropped if the suspect behaves himself according to whatever deal was struck, Cohen said.
He said Ai's release under those terms was probably the best outcome that could be expected, given the degree to which he had angered those in power.
"It's quite a step back for the regime. It demonstrates the utility of large amounts of international attention, plus international connections that had been sufficient to keep him out of jail before," he said.
Ai's release might also have been a face-saving move, coming just days before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao travels to Hungary, Britain and Germany, countries where Ai's supporters have loudly condemned his detention.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle was cautiously optimistic about Ai's release.
"That would be a big relief for the artist and his family, even though the reported circumstances of his release on bail continue to appear depressing," Westerwelle said in a written statement.
State Department deputy spokesman Mark Toner told a news conference Wednesday the U.S. has yet to confirm the media reports of Ai's release but that Washington would welcome it.
"It's always a good thing when an individual who is only in prison for exercising his internationally recognized human rights is released," Toner said.
But there has been no word on the fate of several of Ai's work colleagues who have also been detained.
Hundreds of Chinese lawyers, activists, and other intellectuals have disappeared or been questioned or detained by authorities in the ongoing clampdown, and those released have almost universally kept silent, possibly fearing repercussions.
The three-paragraph Xinhua report said Ai had shown a "good attitude in confessing his crimes" and pledging to pay taxes he owed. It also said Ai's poor health was a factor in his release. The 54-year-old artist has high blood pressure and diabetes.
Xinhua repeated earlier allegations in state media that a company linked to Ai, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd., had evaded a "huge amount" of taxes and intentionally destroyed accounting documents.
Formal charges against Ai have never been announced, and the state media report did not mention any pending charges or trial. It is extremely rare for detained people to be released on bail in China.
Ai's wife Lu Qing has said the company in question is registered and belongs to her, not him. The company handles the business aspects of Ai's art career.
The detention of Ai at Beijing's airport on April 3 made him the most famous victim of a sweeping crackdown against dissent in China that began in February when online calls for protests similar to those in the Middle East and North Africa began to circulate.
Ai was held under a form of detention known as residential surveillance somewhere outside Beijing. His wife was permitted one brief, monitored meeting in which she said he seemed well cared for and was not being held in a formal jail.
He told Lu during the visit that he was taking long walks everyday, had his blood pressure checked seven times a day, and was eating and sleeping well.
Ai has spoken critically about a number of national scandals, including the deaths of students in shoddily built schools that collapsed during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and children killed or sickened by tainted infant formula.
