(AP) ? Add those cute little hedgehogs to the list of pets that can make you sick.

In the last year, 20 people were infected by a rare but dangerous form of salmonella bacteria, and one person died. Investigators say the illnesses were linked to contact with hedgehogs kept as pets.

Health officials on Thursday say such cases seem to be increasing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends thoroughly washing your hands after handling hedgehogs. Also, clean pet cages and other equipment outside.

Other pets that carry the salmonella bug are frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, lizards, chicks and ducklings.

Seven of the hedgehog illnesses were in Washington state, including the death. The other cases were in Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Oregon.

Durex launches condom delivery service in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Need a condom delivered to your doorstep in an hour? Then Dubai is the place to be.

Already the launching pad for American fast-food restaurants and a Canadian coffee shop, the glittering Gulf metropolis now features a service from Durex and Buzzman Middle East called SOS Condoms.

Starting this week, users can have Durex products delivered within an hour to anywhere in the city from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Users order condoms from their smartphone or a website.

Sandrine Girard, a spokesman for Buzzman, said Thursday that the service will expand to other cities with the next city decided by a competition on SOS Condoms' Facebook page.

Dubai has strict laws on sex-related issues, but is more liberal than the rest of the Persian Gulf.

Manhunt under way for Phoenix gunman

(NBC 12)

At least three people were shot at an office complex in Phoenix on Wednesday, police there say, and a manhunt for the shooter is under way.

The building was evacuated and the suspect fled the scene, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said. The shooting--which occurred in the building's lobby--does not appear to be random act, Thompson said, though he would not say if the suspect knew the victims. Witnesses say they heard as many as 10 gunshots fired.

Three victims were transferred to John C. Lincoln Hospital with gunshot wounds, he said. Their conditions were not immediately known, but according to Phoenix's NBC affiliate, one was in "extremely critical condition."

At least three other people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries related to the shooting.

A SWAT team began canvasing a neighborhood in search of the suspected shooter described by Thompson as an "older" white male, possibly in his 60s.

?At this point we don?t believe he is in the area,? Thompson said. ?This doesn?t appear to be a random type of incident.?

The shooting occurred on the same day former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords--who was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Tuscon in 2011--testified at a Senate hearing on gun violence.

"Speaking is difficult but I need to say something important," Giffords said at the top of the hearing. "Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. Too many children. We must do something. It will be hard, but the time is now. You must act. Be bold, be courageous, Americans are counting on you."

Giffords' husband Mark Kelly, who also testified at the hearing, broke the news of the workplace shooting to lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

"While we are having this hearing, in Phoenix, Arizona, there has been what appears to be a shooting with multiple victims," Kelly said. "I certainly agree that universal background checks will go a long way to saving people's lives."

Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare gives business owners their own app to manage specials, track customer visits

Foursquare just recently tweaked its privacy policy to share more user information with local businesses, and it looks like it's already putting some of that data to use in a new app now that the policy has gone into effect. Launched today for the iPhone and iPod touch, Foursquare for Business is just that -- an app designed for business owners instead of customers. In addition to letting managers upload new photos and refresh their specials regularly, it'll also give them a peek into customer activity at their business (or businesses), including information on check-ins and the ability to keep an eye on their top customers. As Foursquare notes in its privacy policy, though, you can opt out of having that check-in information visible to businesses in the app's privacy settings.

Some families to be priced out of health overhaul

(AP) ? Some families could get priced out of health insurance due to what's being called a glitch in President Barack Obama's overhaul law. IRS regulations issued Wednesday failed to fix the problem as liberal backers of the president's plan had hoped.

As a result, some families that can't afford the employer coverage that they are offered on the job will not be able to get financial assistance from the government to buy private health insurance on their own. How many people will be affected is unclear.

The Obama administration says its hands were tied by the way Congress wrote the law. Officials said the administration tried to mitigate the impact. Families that can't get coverage because of the glitch will not face a tax penalty for remaining uninsured, the IRS rules said.

"This is a very significant problem, and we have urged that it be fixed," said Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, an advocacy group that supported the overhaul from its early days. "It is clear that the only way this can be fixed is through legislation and not the regulatory process."

But there's not much hope for an immediate fix from Congress, since the House is controlled by Republicans who would still like to see the whole law repealed.

The affordability glitch is one of a series of problems coming into sharper focus as the law moves to full implementation.

Starting Oct. 1, many middle-class uninsured will be able to sign up for government-subsidized private coverage through new health care marketplaces known as exchanges. Coverage will be effective Jan. 1. Low-income people will be steered to expanded safety-net programs. At the same time, virtually all Americans will be required to carry health insurance, either through an employer, a government program, or by buying their own plan.

Bruce Lesley, president of First Focus, an advocacy group for children, cited estimates that close to 500,000 children could remain uninsured because of the glitch. "The children's community is disappointed by the administration's decision to deny access to coverage for children based on a bogus definition of affordability," Lesley said in a statement.

The problem seems to be the way the law defined affordable.

Congress said affordable coverage can't cost more than 9.5 percent of family income. People with coverage the law considers affordable cannot get subsidies to go into the new insurance markets. The purpose of that restriction was to prevent a stampede away from employer coverage.

Congress went on to say that what counts as affordable is keyed to the cost of self-only coverage offered to an individual worker, not his or her family. A typical workplace plan costs about $5,600 for an individual worker. But the cost of family coverage is nearly three times higher, about $15,700, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

So if the employer isn't willing to chip in for family premiums ? as most big companies already do ? some families will be out of luck. They may not be able to afford the full premium on their own, and they'd be locked out of the subsidies in the health care overhaul law.

Employers are relieved that the Obama administration didn't try to put the cost of providing family coverage on them.

"They are bound by the law and cannot extend further than what the law provides," said Neil Trautwein, a vice president of the National Retail Federation.

Jason London arrested after Arizona bar fight

Scottsdale Police via Reuters

By Alex Dobuzinskis, Reuters

"Dazed and Confused" star Jason London has been arrested in Arizona and charged with assault and disorderly conduct over a bar room fracas in which he is accused of throwing punches and later defecating in a patrol car on his way to jail, a police report showed on Tuesday.?

The 40-year-old actor, who played the main character of Randall "Pink" Floyd in the 1993 coming-of-age comedy "Dazed and Confused," responded on Twitter that he was attacked and injured and that the allegations against him were false.

"I would never say or do the crap they are reporting," he said in the message on Tuesday. "Have faith in me. The truth will come out and you will see."

"Some guy thought I was hitting on his girl and had me jumped," London tweeted. "My wife was in the next room, had no idea what even happened. I hate Arizona." London is married to actress Sofia Karstens.

Police said London was at the Martini Ranch bar in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale on Sunday when an unidentified person complained London had sneezed on him and the person asked him to apologize.

Instead of apologizing, London punched the person, the report from Scottsdale police said. He was escorted out by bouncers and during that time he hit them, leading the security guards to "defend themselves" against London, it added.

A 26-year-old Martini Ranch bouncer, whose name was not released, was listed by police as a victim in the incident. London was charged with assault with intent to injure and disorderly conduct, the report said.

"London showed obvious signs and symptoms of extreme alcohol impairment," one of the responding officers wrote in the report.

Because of swelling and bruising around his right eye from the fracas, London was seen by paramedics but "became belligerent and started cursing" at them, the report said.

While seated in the back of the patrol car on the way to jail, one of the officers saw London "lean to the left and defecate in his pants" after the actor complained about the odor in the vehicle, the police report said.

London has in recent years had a number of guest appearances on television shows, such as the political drama "Scandal." In 2000, he starred in the TV movie "Jason and the Argonauts" and in 1999 was in horror movie "The Rage: Carrie 2."

Man in 'sextortion' case might have coerced 350 women

Authorities call 'sextorition' a variant of 'sexting' in which someone assumes a false Internet identity and coerces others into providing sexually explicit content. Two cases point to the trend.

By Warren Richey,?Staff writer / January 29, 2013

Federal agents on Tuesday took aim at a new type of scam called ?sextortion,? arresting a Glendale, Calif., man on charges that he hacked into e-mail and Facebook accounts of young women and then posed as a woman to convince others to send him nude photos of themselves.

Karen ?Gary? Kazaryan was named in a 30-count indictment charging him with gaining unauthorized access to e-mail, Facebook, and Skype accounts belonging to more than 100 women from 2009 to 2011.

Once he?d hacked into an account, Mr. Kazaryan would change the password and then pose as the female owner of the account, according to the indictment.

He would contact the account holder?s female friends and attempt to persuade or extort them into removing their clothing so he could photograph them via their webcams.

The ?sextortion? scam is a variation of the practice of ?sexting,? sending nude images of one?s self over the Internet to others.

The indictment says Kazaryan used naked or semi-naked images of victims to force them and other victims to remove their clothing again and again.

Investigators suspect he may have victimized more than 350 women. They found more than 3,000 photos of nude or semi-nude women on Kazaryan?s computer, according to court documents.

Some of the explicit photos were discovered in his victim?s accounts and others had allegedly been taken by Kazaryan via Skype.

The indictment charges 15 counts of computer intrusion and 15 counts of identity theft. If convicted, Kazaryan faces up to 105 years in prison.

Last week, a Montgomery, Ala., man was sentenced to 35 years in prison after admitting that he carried out a ?sextortion? scheme from 2009 to 2011 against young girls across the country, including a 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl, both in Louisiana.

He was charged with producing child pornography and engaging in interstate extortion.

Christopher Patrick Gunn used computers, chat rooms, and other social media to befriend and then eventually coerce teenaged girls into sending him explicit photos of themselves via the Internet.

Investigators identified various ruses used by Mr. Gunn. In one he would pose as the new kid in town. He?d send messages over Facebook and engage young girls in web-based conversations.

Eventually he would elicit intimate details from the girls. As the online relationship became more intimate, Gunn would increase the pressure for more intimacy ? such as requesting a photo of the victim in her bra.

Next he would ask her to remove the bra. If she refused, he would threaten to reveal the content of their conversations ? and any existing intimate photos ? to her parents, friends, and school officials.

This is how he convinced the 14-year-old in Louisiana eventually to self-produce pornographic and sexually-explicit videos of herself and send them to Gunn.

According to officials, in one exchange, a 13-year-old victim told Gunn that she did not want to take her shirt off in front of the webcam. Gunn replied that if she did not comply he was poised to push the send button on his computer to reveal their earlier conversations to parents and friends.

The girl pleaded with Gunn, saying she was only 13. She said she had ?a life, please do not ruin it,? officials said.

Gunn responded: ?I am sending now since u won?t do what I want.?

The girl told Gunn if he sent the information she would kill herself. Gunn was unmoved. He demanded she remove her shirt, or else. She did so, authorities said.

According to court documents, Gunn used the following false names online: Tyler Mielke, Jason Lempke, CJ Harper, Dalton Powers, Dalton Walthers, Daniel Applegate, and Daniel Rodgers.

According to court documents, his victims were located in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, California, and New York.

In some cases he is said to have posed as Justin Bieber, promising his victims free concert tickets, backstage passes, or other fan-related benefits in exchange for an explicit photo.

In addition to 35 years in prison, Gunn will be required to register as a sex offender and serve a life term of supervised release.

(AP) ? An unpredictable new element has entered Egypt's wave of political unrest: a mysterious group of masked young men called the Black Bloc who present themselves as the defenders of protesters opposed to the Islamist president's rule.

They boast that they're willing to use force to fight back against Islamists who have attacked protesters in the past ? or against police who crack down on demonstrations. The youths with faces hidden under black masks have appeared among stone-throwing protesters in clashes with police around Egypt the past five days in the wave of political violence that has shaken the country.

During protests in Cairo on Monday, masked youths celebrated around a police armored vehicle in flames in the middle of Tahrir Square, waving their hands in V-for-victory signs.

Their emergence has raised concerns even among fellow members of the opposition, who fear the group could spark Islamist retaliation or that it could be infiltrated to taint their movement. Islamist supporters of President Mohammed Morsi call the bloc a militia and have used it to depict the opposition as a violent force wrecking the nation.

Moreover, some Islamists have threatened to form vigilante groups in response, creating the potential for a spiral of violence between rival "militias."

The bloc's appearance comes amid increasing opposition frustration with Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, and the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists who critics say have imposed a monopoly on power.

The anger has fueled the explosion of violence that at first centered on Friday's second anniversary of the start of the uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak. It accelerated with riots in the Suez Canal city of Port Said by youths furious over death sentences issued by a court against local soccer fans over a bloody stadium riot a year ago. Morsi has struggled to regain control, calling a state of emergency in three Suez Canal-area provinces.

The Black Bloc models itself after anarchist groups by the same name in Europe and the United States that have participated in anti-globalization and other protests the past decade.

In Egypt, the group's secrecy and self-professed dispersed structure make it difficult to determine its actual scope. It communicates mainly by online social media. Its members' identities are unknown and faces unseen, so it's impossible to confirm the authenticity of those who claim to speak in its name.

It's even impossible to know whether every masked young man in the streets belongs to the block or is just a protester hiding his face ? or if the distinction even matters. In Tahrir on Monday, vendors were selling black masks that young men crowded to buy.

"We are the Black Bloc ... seeking people's liberation, the fall of corruption and the toppling of the tyrant," proclaimed a video announcing the group's formation, posted online Thursday. It showed youths dressed in black marching in lines in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

"We have arisen to confront the fascist tyrant regime of the Muslim Brotherhood with its military wing," the video said, warning police not to interfere "or else we will respond without hesitation."

Brotherhood officials, Islamist politicians and pro-government media accuse the group of violence ranging from trying to set fire to the presidential palace and attacking Brotherhood offices to ransacking state buildings, blocking train tracks and even exchanging gunfire with riot police.

The mayhem of the past five days has seen such incidents ? but it is unclear what role Black Bloc members have had, or whether claims the group is armed are true. Security officials say they arrested one suspected bloc member carrying ammunition in Cairo on Sunday.

The state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, which has depicted the group as fueling violence, said that Black Bloc members tried to break into a five-star hotel near Tahrir, and fired guns in the air when other protesters tried to stop them.

A university graduate named Sherif el-Sherafi said he was a founder of the group in an interview with the El-Watan newspaper ? though his claims could not be independently confirmed.

He said the bloc has 10,000 members nationwide, organized into groups of around 20 each, but with no chain of command. Members are trained in self-defense and how to deal with tear gas.

"Violence is not an action but a reaction," he said. He depicted the situation as an inevitable clash between the opposition and government. "What is coming is worse."

Members say the group was created in response to Dec. 4 clashes, when Brotherhood supporters attacked a protest sit-in outside the presidential palace, touching off hours of street battles that left at least 10 dead and hundreds injured.

Many in the opposition saw that incident as a turning point, a sign that Islamists and the Brotherhood were willing to use violence against Morsi's critics.

Monday night, a number of protesters praised the masked men in Tahrir Square.

"They aren't here for sabotage or vandalism, but to protect us from Brotherhood militias," said Ahmed Ali, an engineer.

Ali said police are now "suppressing the revolution on behalf of the murderer Morsi ... So we need these men to defend the revolution."

Hossam al-Hamalawy, a prominent lefist activist, said the Black Bloc youth are "sincere, they want change and they have seen their friends get killed... (So) they have decided to take the matter into their own hands."

But he said it "could be dangerous for the revolution," warning that "this could develop to people carrying arms" ostensibly in response to the Black Bloc.

"Those who topple the regime are the masses," not underground groups, said al-Hamalawy, of the Socialist Revolutionaries, a key group behind the anti-Mubarak uprising.

Morsi's office and the Brotherhood have contended for months that the opposition is using the streets to overturn results of elections that Islamists have consistently won.

Now they point to the Black Bloc as proof their opponents are willing to back violence.

On his Facebook page, Morsi's assistant for foreign affairs Essam el-Haddad accused the Black Bloc of "systematic violence and organized crimes across the country" and accused the opposition of condoning it.

The Brotherhood in a statement denounced "groups of thugs, militias of black gangs" that it accused of attacks on state institution, police and private property. "The silence of opposition political parties on such crimes ... indicates their support."

Morsi's more hard-line Islamist allies have been more vehement.

The Black Bloc "must be liquidated completely. These groups must be dealt with with violence and all force," said Mohammed Abu Samra, head of the political party of Islamic Jihad, which once waged a campaign of militant violence in Egypt.

Some ultraconservatives accused Christians of being behind the bloc, in line with their past attempts to fire up their base with warnings that minority Christians are trying to topple Morsi.

Another former jihadi group, the Gamaa Islamiya, threatened on Sunday to create a vigilante group.

Tareq el-Zomr, a leading figure in the group, said that if security forces don't bring quiet, "it will be the right of the Egyptian people ? and us at the forefront ? to set up popular committees" to protect property and "counter aggression."

A Facebook page also claimed the formation of a new militia called the "Muslims Brigade" ? though it was not possible to confirm that the group exists.

In a video on the page, a group of masked men holding rifles warned of plots by enemies of Islam and a conspiracy by Christians to turn Egypt into a Christian state and accused the main opposition National Salvation Front of helping "burn Egypt."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is planning its first major expansion since it opened in 1971 as a "living memorial" to President John F. Kennedy, with new features including pavilions to house rehearsal halls and classrooms, a memorial garden and a floating stage on the Potomac River.

The plans unveiled Tuesday call for a $100 million addition that would create a more lively outdoor space for gatherings and performances, with a pedestrian bridge connecting the center to the river. Architect Steven Holl drafted the initial concept and was hired from among several contenders to design the expansion.

New marble pavilions ? made from the same Italian Carrara marble as the original building's walls ? would rise from a new garden situated beside the center, and the pavilions would be connected underground. Most of the new facility, totaling about 60,000 square feet of usable space, would be buried below the surface to help preserve the silhouette of the center's primary building.

Officials plan to raise private funds to build the project. To kick off the capital campaign, Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein is giving $50 million to fund half the cost. The center aims to raise an additional $75 million to complete construction and establish a programming fund. Officials hope to open the new space in 2018.

Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser said the new pavilions would have windows to allow visitors to look in on rehearsals of opera, theater or dance.

"We're giving a great improvement in public access to the Kennedy Center, to our art making," Kaiser said. "It's going to allow us to engage our audience in new and different ways."

The new space for rehearsals and education programs also is desperately needed as the center has grown since 1971, Kaiser said. The center now includes a national arts education program and houses the Washington National Opera as a permanent affiliate.

In an interview, Holl said he is honored to work on a memorial to a president he saw inaugurated in 1961 and respected so much.

"The Kennedy Center is a living memorial. It's active, open to the public for performance, the arts, which he really believed in," Holl said.

Preliminary plans call for a memorial garden to honor Kennedy. It could include 46 Gingko trees to note the number of years Kennedy lived, 35 lavender rows for the 35th president, and a video wall for projections of performances from inside the Kennedy Center.

"The idea really is that the landscape is activated," a fusion of architecture and landscape features, Holl said.

It could include a reflecting pool the exact length of the PT-109 boat that Lt. John Kennedy commanded during World War II. Holl envisions a deck along the pool made from the same mahogany wood as the boat. It could also include inscriptions of Kennedy's words.

The biggest challenge in the design concept could be winning approval for a performance stage that would float on the Potomac River, Holl said. Still, he said he has successfully negotiated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a past project that fell inside a flood plain.

"I'm ready for the fight," he said.

Open-air performances were once held on a floating river stage nearby at the Lincoln Memorial in the 1930s.

The new expansion plans come more than 10 years after the Kennedy Center announced a major project to build two new buildings and a plaza over a nearby freeway to connect the center with the National Mall. The $650 million project was essentially canceled in 2005 after budget constraints forced Congress to eliminate $400 million in federal funding for the project.

Kaiser envisioned a museum of the performing arts as part of that project. Now, he said, the center can plan future exhibition galleries in its main building as education programs and rehearsals move to the new facilities.

Rubenstein, a billionaire businessman and a former vice chairman of New York City's Lincoln Center, said the Kennedy Center has been limited by its building over the years. So he wanted to plan a realistic project that could be privately funded without relying on Congress. As the federal budget tightens, Rubenstein said more Americans should consider supporting nonprofit federal entities like the center.

Rubenstein's gift is the largest in the center's history. Combined with previous gifts, he has donated $75 million, making him the center's largest donor.

Adding a garden and outdoor pavilions will make the center more inviting, Rubenstein said.

"Rarely do people say in Washington, 'I'm going to go over and spend a couple hours at the Kennedy Center,'" Rubenstein said, noting it's often an evening destination for shows. But that will change, he said. "What we wanted to do was to remind people that this is a living memorial to a president."

Online social networking at work can improve morale and reduce employee turnover

Jan. 29, 2013 ? By allowing employees to participate in a work-sponsored internal social networking site, a company can improve morale and reduce turnover, according to a Baylor University case study published in the European Journal of Information Systems.

The study, which looked at a financial institution's efforts to acclimate new employees into the organization, also found that participation led to a greater sense of well-being and organizational commitment and better employee engagement.

"For millennials, mixing their work life and their social life via an online social networking created positive emotions for the employees who use the system," said Hope Koch, Ph.D., Baylor University associate professor of information systems in the Hankamer School of Business and study co-author. "These emotions led to more social networking and ultimately helped the employees build personal resources like social capital and organizational learning."

SNSs can have a positive impact on IT employees and their workplace, especially when the new employees are relocating to unfamiliar areas and need to build a network, assume highly technical jobs and become integrated into a large organization where it may be difficult to know where to go for help, according to Koch.

The study centered on a financial institution's efforts to reduce IT employee turnover by starting a social and work-related online networking site. Under the supervision of executives, the IT new hires developed and managed the site's content. Since most new hires had moved hundreds of miles to start their new jobs with the institution, they initially used the social pages as an introduction to the community. After a year or so with the organization, the more senior new hires began using the system to acclimate and mentor incoming new hires.

All study respondents worked in the institution's IT department and included new hires, middle managers and executives. With less than three years of experience, most new hires and interns were men between 21 and 27 years old. The middle managers and executives were baby boomers or members of generation X.

The internal social networking site helped the new hires build social capital in several ways, according to Koch.

"It gave them access to people who could provide useful information and new perspectives and allowed them to meet more senior new hires and executives. These relationships set the new hires at ease during work meetings, helped them understand where to go for help and increased their commitment to the financial institution's mission," she said.

Ironically, middle managers, even though they wanted freedom from mentoring new hires, developed a negative attitude toward online social networking when they realized that the new hires had managed to accrue social capital and social experiences with senior executives that they had not had access to in their many years of work.

The SNS system also helped the new hires maintain relationships with one another, thus facilitating a network of acquaintances that can do small favors and help build emotionally close friendships. Finally, by allowing the new hires to access information on the SNS, meet other new hires and develop and maintain relationships with their peer group, the financial institution was able to shift some of the burden of acclimating the new hires away from middle managers and human resources.

Despite the good outcome of this institution's experience, the study data suggest that organizations should move cautiously when implementing SNSs, Koch said. "While the new hires enjoyed using the system, the middle managers experienced frustration, isolation and envy, and the senior executives were somewhat circumspect.

"Before beginning an internal social networking initiative, organizations should consider analyzing how the system may impact both its users and non-users, paying particular attention to potential isolation of non-users and the negative stigma associated with SNS in the workplace," Koch said.

As BlackBerry 10 debuts, RIM readies its first Super Bowl ad

For the first time ever, RIM, which has seen its standing in the smart-phone market erode, will buy TV advertising space during the Super Bowl.

By Matthew Shaer / January 28, 2013

Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins shows off the BlackBerry 10 OS during the Blackberry Jam Americas in San Jose, Calif., last September. BB10 debuts this week.

Reuters

On Wednesday, Canadian tech company Research in Motion will unveil its long-awaited new operating system, BlackBerry 10. BB10 is a big deal for RIM: If the OS is a success, it could help the struggling RIM revive its fortunes. If it's a failure, RIM will likely continue to lose market shares to the Apple iPhone and phones running Google's Android OS.?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Which is why, for the first time ever, RIM will give one of its products a spot on one of the biggest stages on earth: Super Bowl XLVII. According to the Wall Street Journal, RIM is planning on running at least one spot during the championship game, which will take place on Sunday in New Orleans.?

"A Super Bowl commercial is a great opportunity to show the re-designed, re-engineered and re-invented?BlackBerry to tens of millions of consumers on the largest advertising stage of the year," RIM exec Frank Boulben said in a statement. No word yet on exactly what the ads will look like, although we're hoping for something on the level of last year's "Halftime in America" spot. "Halftime in the smartphone wars," perhaps.?

We can picture it now: Scrappy RIM, playing the doggedly-determined long-shot...?

So hey, can BB10 save RIM? Well, in a smart piece over at the Telegraph, Matt Warman argues that the question is a complicated one ? RIM has long thrived in the business world, among corporate clients that prized the security and accessibility of RIM devices. And yet increasingly, these same clients have shown a willingness to adopt devices such as the Apple iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S III.?

Here's Warman:?

So RIM must rapidly become cool among its affluent core, which so quickly ran for the iPhone and now accepts Samsung enthusiastically too. And it must also quickly make even its premium devices affordable to a fickle younger user base. In that sense, the quality of the phone is at best equally important to the perception of the brand. At worst, BB10 is simply too little too late for BlackBerry thanks to a lethal combination of being consistently decent but not outstanding when it comes to cool factor, hardware, software and app availability.

We tend to agree. It's not inconceivable that RIM could mount some kind of comeback ? there are signs that even the mighty Apple is losing its cache ? but it would require a significant rejiggering of the BlackBerry brand. Not to mention a phone and OS that consumers view as must-have.?

Breast-conserving surgery may top mastectomy for cancer survival

Over the past decade, women with early-stage breast cancer have increasingly?opted for mastectomy over lumpectomy despite evidence that breast-conserving therapy plus radiation is as effective as removal of the breast.

This trend has seemed particularly prevalent among younger, more affluent women from urban areas. New research suggests such decisions may be particularly unwise.

In a study published online Monday in the journal Cancer, researchers found that??early-stage breast cancer patients who undergo breast-conserving therapy ??lumpectomy and radiation ? instead of mastectomy may actually live longer.

?In light of the reports showing renewed interest in mastectomy, and because there have been few opportunities to observe long-term, treatment-associated outcomes in the general population, we asked whether the comparable survival outcome of BCT compared with mastectomy as seen in randomized controlled trials could be generalized to the non-clinical trial population,? wrote lead author E. Shelley Hwang, M.D., M.P.H., Duke University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"There are lots of women who think the more [treatment] they do, the better they will do," she told HealthDay News. "This refutes that."

Creativity Vs Innovation In Business

How companies can encourage creativity and innovation?

The word ?creative? is generally not accepted within the business environment because it is understood as ?vague and undefined? (Gogatz and Mondajar, 2005, p.123). The word ?innovation? however, has found its place in the business world, given that business people constantly seek to innovate their products, services or ideas; it seems that entrepreneurs want to innovate, rather than create.

To be able to quickly respond to the market changes and customers needs, companies need to encourage innovative thoughts of their employees (Gogatz and Mondejar, 2005). Indeed, innovation is imperative for the growth of competitive market and success of the business (Christensen et al., 2001). In fact, Robinson and Stern (1997) argue that a company can be considered creative when its employees create a novel idea without being directly taught how to do it. On the other hand, authors also suggest that there are six key solutions which should be applied to encourage corporate creativity: (1) Alignment, (2) Self-Initiated Activity, (3) Unofficial Activity, (4) Serendipity, (5) Diverse Stimuli and finally, (6) Within-Company Communication. Consequently, these six ingredients not only encourage employee?s creativity but also innovation.

(1) Alignment

The first condition to encourage creativity or innovation in an organisation is to make sure that the views of different employees are in accordance. According to Robinson and Stern (1997), a company can function without strong alignment, however, misalignment is highly destructive to a company?s creative process. In fact, alignment is the ability to show a relationship between innovation and company?s performance.? Innovation is then shown as an essential element of the business plan, because it is a mean of reaching financial goals (Strassmann, P. 1997). Consequently, the views of upper management on innovation correspond with the views of the R&D department and other employees responsible for innovation. The example of Apple Inc. is representative of the importance of alignment in the success of a company. Prior to 1997, Apple did not release innovative products on the market (Gallo, 2011). The technologies were outdated and as a result, customers were not satisfied. Arguably, the come back of Steve Job as Chief Executive, allowed the company to focus on developing innovative products with the latest technologies. Since then, the financial performance was assured because customer satisfaction and active R&D was aligned with the financial goals of the company.

(2) Self-initiated activity

The second key ingredient for corporate creativity is self-initiated activity. Businesses should be aware that promotion of self-initiative activities among their employees is essential, to improve the work environment of employees (Robinson and Stern, 1997).? Employees should be able to implement their ideas without the involvement of the upper management. The example of a waiter finding a new way to dress a table in a restaurant, allowing him to serve twice as many customers as before, because he decided to implement his new idea without the approval of his manager. After releasing the increased performance, the manager takes a decision to make the waiter?s idea the new policy of the restaurant. The freedom of implementation allowed employee to improve directly the way of work. Consequently, the waiter?s creativity has proven to be beneficial to the functioning of the whole organisation.

(3) Unofficial activity

?The third element is unofficial activity, which occurs when employees are developing new projects on their own, without the supervision of management. This allows the project to grow to full maturity, before being officially presented. Indeed, there are no strings attached, either financially or regarding time scale (Robinson and Stern, 1997). In fact, Robinson and Stern argue that giving an official status to an idea can create a range of restrictions, which will be reverberated on the ability of the employees to be creative. Removing those restriction will give the employees enough time to conduct their unofficial activities and fully develop their ideas. The example of Google shows relevance of this element encouraging creativity. Google belief in their employee?s innovative minds is shown in their policy. The company allows their staff to spend twenty per cent of their office time on developing their own projects (Forbes, 2011a). The employees are encouraged to contribute actively and personally to the overall success of the company. They are then fully integrated into the company identity.

(4) Serendipity

?Serendipity plays an important role in the creative process. According to the Oxford Dictionary, serendipity can be defined as ?the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way? (n.d.). It refers to a ?fortunate accident? during which employees can take advantage of an unexpected discovery by further developing the new idea into an innovative product (Robinson and Stern, 1997). The companies therefore should ensure that the ?mistakes? made by their employees are corrected in a thoughtful way, and consider any unexpected outcome as a potential idea worth developing.? One of the most famous examples is the discovery of a well-known antibiotic: Penicillin. In fact, Alexander Fleming accidentally left some culture of bacteria in a contaminated area of his laboratory. The contamination having the form of a fungus appeared to kill the bacteria. Further researching the previous fungus, Fleming realised that he had discovered Penicillin, the first antibiotic (Bud, 2007). This was not his first serendipity, he also discovered Lysozymes, a well-known enzyme (Bud, 2007). This proves that further researching and unexpected results can lead to innovation and creativity.

(5) Diverse stimuli

The fifth element of creative process is diverse stimuli. Indeed, every person pays attention to different events and recall different ?things?. In this way, a company will beneficiate from communicating with its employees in the most various ways, to make sure that everyone had a chance to understand (Robinson and Stern, 1997). Consequently, organising many activities will allow the company to reach the maximum number of employees. The communication between employees will increase in effectiveness, due to the numerous interpretations each of them have of problems. Various stimuli increase the interconnection between employees and improve the understanding of the company?s goal. In fact, when Dan Buchner has worked on developing products for Procter and Gamble, he has encouraged members of his team to spend time at customer?s houses (Horth, 2010). Buchner therefore decided to conduct an in-depth research on how people clean their houses and this allowed the employees to obtain ?new? experiences. Indeed, this stimulus was essential in the way that it regroups employees to think about the company?s goals. The outcome of these stimuli is likely to be creative.

(6) Within-company communication

The final ingredient of corporate creativity is within-company communication, which aim is to create cooperation and understanding between employees for planned activities within the corporation. Employees will then share their ideas and help each other develop their projects and their ideas further. According to Robinson and Stern (1997), communication happens naturally in small corporations, while within-company, the communication process is much harder in firms with multiple locations. It can be argued however that Google, which is a large international corporation, has successfully developed an internal communication system. It allowed the company to use the full potential of its employees by combining their knowledge and creativity into new products. Indeed, Google?s Vice President Marissa Mayer has established weekly, voluntary meetings with employees, where staff have an opportunity to present their creative ideas. The goal of such meetings is to encourage employees to think creatively and develop communication between upper management and employees. Therefore Google hold the belief that employee?s creativity should be encouraged on a regular basis, but the upper management of the company should initiate this encouragement.

Rebel comic aims to exorcise Italian politics' walking dead

POMEZIA, Italy (Reuters) - Comic Beppe Grillo calls four-time Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi a "dwarf zombie", outgoing premier Mario Monti "rigor Montis" and Italy's political class "the walking dead".

Grillo, founder of a movement that will rival even the biggest parties at elections next month, hopes to wipe out the old guard: "We will bring some exorcists to parliament," he said in an interview after a rain-drenched rally south of Rome.

The 64-year-old Grillo is quick with wisecracks but the his 5-Star Movement is no joke. It is currently Italy's second- or third-biggest party, depending on the poll, riding a wave of discontent at conventional politics and economic austerity.

Crossing Italy on his "Tsunami tour", Grillo hopes to overturn Italian politics in a way that has not happened since the "Clean Hands" corruption scandals buried a political generation in the early 1990s, making way for Berlusconi's political rise.

"Grillo is attracting people who are disgusted with politics," said Maurizio Pessato, of pollsters SWG.

Rivals decry the movement as a populist vehicle with vague policy aims and it lost some momentum towards the end of last year as criticism grew that Grillo's authoritarian style was stifling independent voices.

But the 5-Star Movement is still second only to Pier Luigi Bersani's Democratic Party (PD) at 17.2 percent, up almost 2 percentage points in two weeks, an SWG poll published on Friday said, tying Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL), which lost half a percentage point from a week earlier.

That means that more than 50 - Grillo says 100 - of the movement's candidates will fill parliament's 945 seats. None of the 5-Star candidates has ever been there, and most are complete newcomers to politics at any level.

His influence has already guaranteed Italy a new generation of lawmakers - more than half of those elected on February 24-25 will be novices, according to a study published last week.

NOVICES

Instead of the movement's leaders picking its candidates, the 5-Star Movement held a primary, a move the PD copied. Monti picked political novices for his list and Berlusconi's PDL eliminated candidates accused of ties to the mafia.

"A mother of three, a 23-year-old college graduate and an engineer," Grillo said, describing who he voted for in the primary. "Those are the people I want to see in parliament."

A calm, unimposing presence in the privacy of his camper-van, the opposite of the hyperactive, foul-mouthed persona he projects on stage, Grillo is not running for election himself, but is lending his "face and popularity to help others."

Grillo wants a referendum on whether Italy should stay in the euro and has policies ranging from free Internet access to scrapping a planned high speed rail link with France.

But his main appeal is his call to get rid of the political class that has led the country for two decades.

"The PDL says it will not put forward any candidates who are under criminal investigation... There won't be anyone left," Grillo growled from stage in a routine that targeted the politicians he hopes to sweep away.

Corruption and a recession helped turn 5-Star from a fringe movement into a real political force last year. In regional elections in October, it received more than 20 percent of the national vote and became the single-largest party in Sicily.

Thirty-six percent of Italian voters see the movement as the most transparent force in the election, by far the biggest percentage, a separate SWG poll showed on Friday.

The 5-Star Movement's candidates have an average age of 42, the lowest of any party. On Grillo's insistence, none has a criminal record or is under criminal investigation, and all have agreed to serve a maximum of two terms.

During the rally in Pomezia, the candidates stood timidly on stage behind Grillo as he ranted through his campaign routine.

To those concerned about the inexperience of the movement's candidates, Grillo pointed to the unknowns standing behind him: "I'd rather take a shot in the dark with these guys than commit assisted suicide with those others."

Exercise equipment is complicated. Some equipment can do more than one thing for your health while others only help you do one activity. Cost, performance, portability, convenience, and the room for your equipment all plays a part in your decision about which equipment to buy. You can also shop around for used equipment in good condition depending on your needs.

?A treadmill for instance helps you to build endurance and increase cardiac health by letting you walk inside in all kinds of weather. You may be able to change speeds or inclines but you still stay in one place to perform the exercise. For some this can be boring, for others it doesn?t tackle their problem flabby spots. Often you can find used treadmills in your local paper.

Other equipment may offer weight training, endurance training, and a combination of pullies and benches. These may offer many different ways to improve your health but may be bulky and costly.

Stationary bikes take up less room and work your legs and abs but may not offer you the upper body exercise you desire. Bicycling outside is another solution but may be hindered if you have small children and can?t get away.

Walking is the least costly exercise available and can be enhanced by the addition of leg or arm weights and a good pair of shoes.

Deciding which exercise equipment is best for your personal health means you ask yourself these questions. What can I afford? What exercise is realistic for my personal ability and goals? What kind of space do I have to store the equipment or do I have an area to keep it up all the time? What is my personal fitness goal? to increase strength, endurance, or to loose weight? Answering these questions before you buy will help you to choose the right exercise equipment for your needs. It is a matter of your health.

FIFA, IOC send condolences to Brazil fire victims

SAO PAULO (AP) ? FIFA and local organizers canceled an event celebrating 500 days to go until the 2014 World Cup because of a nightclub fire that killed more than 230 people in southern Brazil on Sunday.

FIFA said it maintained confidence in Brazilian authorities' security plans for the World Cup, but the event scheduled for Monday in the capital of Brasilia was called off in respect to the victims of the fire in the southern city of Santa Maria.

Organizers said they felt "extremely sad for what happened" and expressed "their sympathy to the families of the victims."

The unveiling of the official World Cup poster was scheduled for Monday but also was postponed. The poster will be unveiled Wednesday after a meeting of the local organizing committee in Rio de Janeiro.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, who began a four-day visit to Brazil on Sunday, posted a message on his Twitter account expressing sympathies.

"Very sad to hear of the tragedy in southern Brazil. My condolences to the families of victims," wrote Valcke, who is scheduled to visit Fortaleza, Brasilia, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro in the center and north of the country.

Santa Maria is about 155 miles from Porto Alegre, among 12 World Cup host cities, in the same state of Rio Grande do Sul. The nightclub fire, which appeared to be the world's deadliest in more than a decade, is likely to again increase scrutiny of safety efforts ahead of the World Cup and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. FIFA reiterated its belief that the local organizing committees and Brazilian city, state and federal agencies are up to the task.

"FIFA has full confidence in the security plans of the LOC and the local authorities," soccer's governing body said in a statement.

The 2016 Rio organizing committee expressed "solidarity with the families and friends of the victims of this tragedy," adding "it wishes a quick recovery to those affected."

The International Olympic Committee said that "we simply send our sympathies to friends and families."

Hosting the World Cup and Olympics two years apart has heightened attention on security and crime issues in Brazil, although the discussion has focused possible violence. South Africa's relatively high rates of violent crime were similarly scrutinized before the 2010 World Cup, but that tournament was held without major incident.

Because of the tragedy, the Rio Grande do Sul state soccer federation canceled Sunday matches in its first-division regional championship. There was a minute of silence honoring the victims before matches across the country.

China Considering End To Video Game Console Ban | Geekosystem

Good news for Chinese gamers! China is thinking about lifting its ban on game consoles. The news is just speculation right now, and it?s based on the Playstation 3 receiving a quality certification from the Chinese government, but even that speculation has been enough to bump up stock prices for Sony and Nintendo, both of which are champing at the bit to enter the Chinese market.?Obviously, a lifting of the ban would help those companies greatly. It might also destroy the mental and physical development of Chinese children, since that?s what the ban was trying to protect.

The ban was put into place in 2000 by seven ministries of the Chinese government, and there seem to be conflicting reports from those ministries about the future of the ban. An unidentified source at the Ministry of Culture was quoted in the China Daily saying, ?We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market.?

Meanwhile, a semi-identified source only calling himself ?Bai? at the ministry?s cultural market department said, ?The ministry is not considering lifting the ban.?

Lenovo managed to sneak their Eedoo CT510 system into the Chinese market despite the ban last year. The Eedoo is similar to the Xbox Kinect, and senses a user?s motion to control the games, so Lenovo billed it as an ?exercise and entertainment machine.? It stands to reason that other consoles could make the same argument for things like Wii Fit and Playstation Move.

Whether the rumors are true or not, Nintendo has already seen a 3.5% increase in their share price, and Sony shares are selling up 8% at the moment ? largely on happy thoughts, the raw fuel of the stock market.
