Jackson doctor called suicidal after verdict (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A judge's stern voice broke the silence of a Los Angeles courtroom: "Money for madness medicine," he said before sentencing Dr. Conrad Murray to the maximum four years behind bars for Michael Jackson's death.

"Absolutely no sense of fault, and is and remains dangerous" to the community, Judge Michael Pastor said as he delivered a nearly half-hour tongue lashing that denounced Murray as a greedy, remorseless physician whose gross negligence killed the King of Pop.

Pastor said Murray sold out his profession for a promised fee of $150,000 a month and accused Murray of committing a "horrific violation of trust" when he agreed to give Jackson a powerful anesthetic every night as an unorthodox cure for insomnia.

Murray will likely serve less than two years in county jail, not state prison, because of California's overcrowded prisons and jails. Sheriff's officials said he will be housed in a one-man cell and be kept away from other inmates.

The tall, imposing Murray, who has been in jail for three weeks, was allowed to change into street clothes ? a charcoal gray suit and white shirt ? for court. But he wore prison issue white socks and soft slippers.

Jackson's family said in a statement read in court that they were not seeking revenge but a stiff sentence for Murray that served as a warning to opportunistic doctors. Afterward, they said they were pleased with the judge's sentence.

"We're going to be a family. We're going to move forward. We're going to tour, play the music and miss him," brother Jermaine Jackson said.

After sentencing, Murray mouthed the words "I love you" to his mother and girlfriend in the courtroom. Murray's mother, Milta Rush, sat alone on a bench in the courthouse hallway.

"My son is not what they charged him to be," she said quietly. "He was a gentle child from the time he was small."

Of her son's future, she said, "God is in charge."

Murray, 58, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after a six-week trial that presented the most detailed account yet of Jackson's final hours, a story of the performer's anguish over being unable to sleep.

Pastor was relentless in his bashing of Murray, saying the physician lied repeatedly and abandoned Jackson when he was at his most vulnerable ? under the anesthesia that Murray administered in an unorthodox effort to induce sleep.

"It should be made very clear that experimental medicine is not going to be tolerated, and Mr. Jackson was an experiment," he said.

Propofol is supposed to be used in hospital settings and has never been approved for sleep treatments, yet Murray acknowledged giving it to Jackson then leaving the room on the day the singer died.

As for defense arguments that Jackson tempted his own fate when he demanded propofol, Pastor said, "Dr. Murray could have walked away and said no as countless others did. But Dr. Murray was intrigued with the prospect of this money-for-madness medicine."

Pastor said Murray was motivated by a desire for "money, fame and prestige" and cared more about himself than Jackson.

The doctor was deeply in debt when he agreed to serve as Jackson's personal physician for $150,000 a month during his comeback tour. The singer, however, died before Murray received any money.

"There are those who feel Dr. Murray is a saint and those who feel he is the devil," Pastor said. "He is neither. He is a human being who caused the death of another human being."

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff implored Pastor to look at Murray's life and give him credit for a career of good works. "I do wonder whether the court considers the book of a man's life, not just one chapter," Chernoff said.

The judge responded: "I accept Mr. Chernoff's invitation to read the whole book of Dr. Murray's life. But I also read the book of Michael Jackson's life, including the sad final chapter of Dr. Murray's treatment of Michael Jackson."

Chernoff suggested that Murray is being punished enough by the stigma of having caused Jackson's death. "Whether Dr. Murray is a barista or a greeter at Walmart, he is still the man that killed Michael Jackson," he said.

The judge said one of the most disturbing aspects of Murray's case was a slurred recording of Jackson recovered from the doctor's cell phone. His speech was barely intelligible and Murray would say later Jackson was under the influence of propofol.

Pastor suggested Murray might have been planning to use it to blackmail Jackson if there was a falling out between them. "That tape recording was Dr. Murray's insurance policy," Pastor said.

Defense attorneys never explained in court why he recorded Jackson six weeks before his death. In the recording, Jackson talked about the importance of making his shows on the comeback tour "phenomenal."

Jackson's death in June 2009 stunned the world, as did the ensuing investigation that led to Murray being charged in February 2010.

Murray declined to testify during his trial but did participate in a documentary in which he said he didn't consider himself guilty of any crime and blamed Jackson for entrapping him into administering the propofol doses.

"Yikes," the judge said. "Talk about blaming the victim!"

Murray's attorneys presented 34 letters from relatives, friends and former patients to win a lighter sentence. They described Murray's compassion as a doctor, including accepting lower payments from his mostly poor patients.

In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors cited Murray's statements to advocate for the maximum term. They also want him to pay restitution to the singer's three children ? Prince, Paris and Blanket.

The exact amount Murray has to pay will be determined at a hearing in January.

In the meantime, sheriff's officials said Murray will serve a little less than two years behind bars. A recent change in California law requires Murray to serve his sentence in county jail rather than state prison.

District Attorney Steve Cooley said he was considering asking Pastor to modify the sentence to classify the crime as a serious felony warranting incarceration in state prison.

"This is going to be a real test of our criminal justice system to see if it's meaningful at all," Cooley said.

US will not help pay for Europe's debt woes

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Monday the United States stands ready to do its part to help Europe with its deepening debt crisis, even as the White House ruled out any financial contributions from U.S. taxpayers.

Meantime, a top European official offered his assurances to Obama and the American people that Europe's leaders fully understood the magnitude of the crisis. But European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso warned that decisions on how to solve the economic woes could take time.

The annual meeting between U.S. and European Union officials came amid growing fears over the future of the euro. Experts say that without drastic action, the euro could be days away from collapsing, a scenario that could cause more financial damage to the already shaky American economy.

While Obama offered no specifics on how the U.S. may be willing to assist Europe, he said failing to resolve the continent's debt crisis could damage a U.S. economy saddled with slow growth and 9 percent unemployment.

"If Europe is contracting, or if Europe is having difficulties, then it's much more difficult for us to create good here jobs at home," Obama said at the conclusion of the day-long summit.

While Obama has offered support to his European peers, the U.S. believes the Europeans have the financial capacity to solve the debt crisis on their own.

But some U.S. allies, including Finland and the Netherlands, have called for the International Monetary Fund to be bolstered with more capital so that it could in turn help stem Europe's debt crisis from deepening and spreading.

The U.S. is the single-biggest stakeholder in the IMF. And earlier Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the IMF has substantial resources already.

"We do not in any way believe that additional resources are required from the United States and from American taxpayers," Carney said.

European leaders are set to meet Dec. 9 to discuss next steps in tackling the financial crisis. New ideas were circulating Monday for how to finally cap the debt woes that began in Greece two years ago and have spread to other larger economies, most notably Italy.

One idea gaining momentum, was a radical proposal in which countries that use the common currency would cede control of a big chunk of their budgets to a central authority. Some say the proposal would be a big leap toward a United States of Europe, a move that could greatly enhance European stability, but at the cost, critics say, of national sovereignty and democratic accountability.

Another plan being aired in the face of fierce German resistance is for the eurozone's six triple A rated nations to pool their resources through a joint bond to prop up some of the single currency bloc's most indebted members. Germany, the EU's richest member, rejects the idea because it fears it would be tapped for the lion's share of the bailout

Back in Washington, Barroso said Europe's leaders are taking strong steps to solve what he called an unprecedented situation.

"We are absolutely serious about the magnitude of the challenges," he said. "You have to understand that sometimes some decisions take time."

Carney said that Obama, along with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, would continue to stay in close contact with European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Greece later this week to meet with new Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, who took office earlier this month.

While Monday's meeting between Obama and European Union leaders centered on the global economy, there were also discussions on supporting democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, cooperation on counterterrorism and trans-Atlantic law enforcement, and Iran.

Iraq Attack: Suicide Car Bomber Crashes Into Prison Near Baghdad, Killing At Least 15

BAGHDAD ? A suicide bomber slammed a car packed with explosives into the gate of a prison north of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 19 people, Iraqi officials said.

The bombing in the town of Taji, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of the capital, is the third major attack in about a week in Iraq, and raises questions about the ability of the nation's security forces to protect the country after U.S. troops leave in just over a month.

A senior Iraqi security official warned that even more attacks may be in the offing ahead of the American withdrawal.

The attacker struck the main gate of al-Hout prison at 8:00 a.m. local time, when many employees and guards were on their way to work, said a police officer. Ten policemen were among the dead and the rest were civilians, he added. At least 22 people were wounded.

Police officials said the death toll was raised after cleanup crews found more bodies while removing debris at the site.

Two health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Guards and policemen fired into the air to disperse the crowds after the explosion, fearing a second blast, said policeman Hisham Ahmed.

"Our patrol rushed to the explosion site. There was smoke and fire all around the place. I saw bodies of four policemen on the ground and scattered flesh," he said. "Women were among the wounded."

Security forces set up a cordon around the prison to prevent any escape attempt by the inmates, Ahmed said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the prison attack, but suicide bombings generally are a hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

The military spokesman for Baghdad, Qassim al-Moussawi, said that the aim of the latest attacks across the country was to "negatively affect the moral" of the Iraqi security forces. He said he was expecting more attacks by insurgents ahead of the U.S. withdrawal.

"We have information that terrorist groups are planning to intensify their activities, and they are mobilizing all their capabilities to increase attacks for the rest of the year," he said.

Violence has ebbed across Iraq since the height of the fighting, but deadly bombings and shootings still occur almost daily as U.S. troops prepare to leave.

Last Saturday a string of explosions hit a market in Baghdad and an area on the city's western outskirts, killing at least 15 people. Three days earlier, a triple bombing in the southern city of Basra killed 19 people.

Iraqi security officials maintain that they are fully prepared for the American withdrawal, which is required under a 2008 security pact between the U.S. and Iraq. About 15,000 U.S. troops are still in the country, down from a one-time high of about 170,000. All of those troops will be out of the country by the end of December.

But many Iraqis are concerned that insurgents may use the transition period to launch more attacks in a bid to regain their former prominence and destabilize the country.

Shoppers Bask in Sunshine for Union Square Holiday Market

By Paul Lomax

Special to DNAinfo

UNION SQUARE ? It's beginning to look a lot like...June?

Thousands of holiday shoppers basked in the balmy weather this weekend as they picked up gifts for friends and loved ones at the Union Square Holiday Market.

With the temperatures in Manhattan climbing into the 60s Sunday, shoppers hit the streets and the tents to kick off their holiday shopping.

Students Andrea Mufarreh and Ellen Ebert, both 19 and from San Francisco, enjoyed the spring-like weather while shopping for Christmas gifts for family and friends.

"The weather is beautiful," said Mufarreh. "I'm loving it!"

Ebert said that she was "enjoying New York City, especially in this weather. It's beautiful!"

The Holiday Market, which takes over part of the green space from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, is a smorgasbord of over 100 merchants hawking everything from handmade jewelry to bags and accessories made from recycled plastic, according to Urban Space, the market's operator.

Alphan Atila, 34, of Turkey, sells home decor from Central Asia and Turkey at a booth called "Tribal Home."

"This is our 10th year here and we love it," he said. "Considering what's going in the world and the economic climate, I really can't complain. So far since we opened business has been good."

Liz Rees, the Director of Marketing for Urban Spaces, said that the opening weekend for the market, which is in its 18th year, was helped along by the nice weather.

"I've been here since 2002 and I've seen an explosion of emerging designers and local artists that have made this market one of the most popular places for people to shop for holiday gifts," she said.

One such emerging business owner is Kip Cosson, 51, the owner of Kip Kids, a childrens' clothing line. This is his 16th year at the market.

"I lost my job as an interior designer 20 years ago, and it was the best thing that happened to me," said Cosson, who just published his first book, "Ned Visits New York."

"Seriously, I haven't looked back since I went out on my own and started my own business."

The nation's weather

This NOAA satellite image taken Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at 12:45 a.m. EST shows clouds cover the Eastern half of the nation, while clear skies return to the Plains. This creates some heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms in the Southeast, while snow showers develop in the North. Meanwhile, a ridge of high pressure builds over the Plains, bringing sunny and dry conditions. (AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND)

This is the Weather Underground forecast for Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, for United States. A strong storm will roll through the eastern third of the country, bringing rain to the Southeast and a mixture of rain and snow to the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest. More rain and snow is likely in the Northwest. (AP Photo/Weather Underground)

A cold front will trek eastward Sunday from the Mississippi River Valley, bringing wet conditions to the East Coast.

A low pressure system over the Great Lakes will continue northeastward into eastern Canada. This system will propel a cold front eastward, starting from the Great Lakes and extending down the Mississippi River Valley. By evening, this system will stretch from the Northeast down the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys to the Gulf of Mexico.

The southern end of this system could pull added moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. If thunderstorms develop, they would likely be contained to the Southeast amid strong winds and heavy rains in some areas. In the north, the back side of this system will pull cold air in from Canada, allowing for widespread snow showers to develop across the Great Lakes with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.

In the Plains, a high pressure area will build behind the mass of cold air. Expect mostly sunny skies and cool temperatures to persist as cold, dry air pours in from central Canada. Further west, a low pressure trough off the Pacific Northwest will push a cold front onshore. This will trigger more rain and high elevation snow in the Cascades. Snow levels will be high, around 8,000 feet, due to this relatively warm system. The tail end of the front out West may bring light precipitation to far northern California.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of -16 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 88 degrees at Edinburg, Texas

Mexico acknowledges 2nd Mayan reference to 2012 (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexico's archaeology institute downplays theories that the ancient Mayas predicted some sort of apocalypse would occur in 2012, but on Thursday it acknowledged that a second reference to the date exists on a carved fragment found at a southern Mexico ruin site.

Most experts had cited only one surviving reference to the date in Mayan glyphs, a stone tablet from the Tortuguero site in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco.

But the National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement that there is in fact another apparent reference to the date at the nearby Comalcalco ruin. The inscription is on the carved or molded face of a brick. Comalcalco is unusual among Mayan temples in that it was constructed of bricks.

Arturo Mendez, a spokesman for the institute, said the fragment of inscription had been discovered years ago and has been subject to thorough study. It is not on display and is being kept in storage at the institute.

The "Comalcalco Brick," as the second fragment is known, has been discussed by experts in some online forums. Many still doubt that it is a definite reference to Dec. 21, 2012 or Dec. 23, 2012, the dates cited by proponents of the theory as the possible end of the world.

"Some have proposed it as another reference to 2012, but I remain rather unconvinced," David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin, said in a message to The Associated Press.

Stuart said the date inscribed on the brick "'is a Calendar Round,' a combination of a day and month position that will repeat every 52 years."

The brick date does coincide with the end of the 13th Baktun; Baktuns were roughly 394-year periods and 13 was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas. The Mayan Long Count calendar begins in 3114 B.C., and the 13th Baktun ends around Dec. 21, 2012.

But the date on the brick could also correspond to similar dates in the past, Stuart said.

"There's no reason it couldn't be also a date in ancient times, describing some important historical event in the Classic period. In fact, the third glyph on the brick seems to read as the verb huli, "he/she/it arrives."

"There's no future tense marking (unlike the Tortuguero phrase), which in my mind points more to the Comalcalco date being more historical that prophetic," Stuart wrote.

Both inscriptions ? the Tortuguero tablet and the Comalcalco brick ? were probably carved about 1,300 years ago and both are cryptic in some ways.

The Tortuguero inscription describes something that is supposed to occur in 2012 involving Bolon Yokte, a mysterious Mayan god associated with both war and creation.

However, erosion and a crack in the stone make the end of the passage almost illegible, though some read the last eroded glyphs as perhaps saying, "He will descend from the sky."

The Comalcalco brick is also odd in that the molded or inscribed faces of the bricks were probably laid facing inward or covered with stucco, suggesting they were not meant to be seen.

The Institute of Anthropology and History has long said rumors of a world-ending or world-changing event in late December 2012 are a Westernized misinterpretation of Mayan calendars.

The institute repeated Thursday that "western messianic thought has twisted the cosmovision of ancient civilizations like the Maya."

The institute's experts say the Mayas saw time as a series of cycles that began and ended with regularity, but with nothing apocalyptic at the end of a given cycle.

Given the strength of Internet rumors about impending disaster in 2012, the institute is organizing a special round table of 60 Mayan experts next week at the archaeological site of Palenque, in southern Mexico, to "dispel some of the doubts about the end of one era and the beginning of another, in the Mayan Long Count calendar."

92% Drive

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who spends his days as a Hollywood stunt driver and a worker and a car repair shop. By night, Driver drives (yep, there will be probably hundreds of uses of the word "drive" in this review) criminals to and from their heist. When a heist involving his neighbors husband who was recently released from prison goes wrong, and the criminals find out who Driver really is, it's time for him to take charge of the situation and to do whatever it takes to get payback and stay alive. I guess the first thing I'll talk about is the fact that it in no way is an action film. It is a tense drama that features some strong violence. There are some defining action moments, but this is mostly a slow paced thriller, which was definitely a brilliant aspect pertaining to the film's style. The first hour or so consists only of strong character development, and a lot of leading up to the last forty minutes where a lot of mindless yet awesome action occurs. The action sequences are arranged quite well. The whole film itself has sort of an art house feel to it, and this action seems pretty gritty, and pretty realistic if I may say. Don't mistake this for another Fast and Furious film, this is its own movie, and the action here is something [similar] to what would really happen in a situation like this. The only thing that was over exemplified was the blood, there was a lot of blood. For anyone who enjoys gruesome films, this is right up your alley. Even if you are into superhero movies, this is for you; according to actor Ryan Gosling (found HERE).Speaking of Ryan Gosling, 2011 seems to be the year of Gosling, as he's starred in the hit romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (my review can be found HERE), and the upcoming Clooney film The Ides of March. He was also in Blue Valentine, The Notebook, and Lars and the Real Girl. Drive is his best film so far. Even judging by the original trailer, you could tell Gosling would be great. He was spectacular. Seeing Gosling's character strolling down the street, blood stains all over his super-cool Scorpion Jacket is a pleasure to watch. The supporting cast are also definitely great too. I'll start with my favorite of them; Albert Brooks, who switched over from his usual good guy character to a bad-ass man-in-charge, and Brooks' performance is masterful, scary, and sheds some blood. Hellboy star Ron Perlman is also a favorite of mine in this, and is a great addition to an already well-picked cast. The film featured other great performances from Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, and Carey Mulligan. The film gets it's amazingly original arthouse style due to the fantastic direction from acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and another Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives). Nicolas's directing style is wholly unique, and wholly original, as well as wholly entertaining, and wholly beautiful. What I love the most about his directing style, as far as indie films go, was not only his lack of complexity (I mean that in a good way), but his arthouse style was very unique. I was absolutely mesmerized by it; it is almost impossible to describe, you have to see it to believe it.Drive is one of the best experiences I've had watching a film. It's always good when a movie ends, and you realize that it was flawless (as well as giving it a huge round of applause, as my theater did). Drive is a very fun, gory, gruesome, but has a sense of tense drama moments (which basically consists of the entire first hour until the hyper-violent era of the film occurs), as well as a mesmerizing performance from Ryan Gosling, and great direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all make this film that is destined to become a classic.Driver: When you get your money, his debt's paid. He's out for good and you never go near his family again. You understand?

Scores of elephants die in Zimbabwe heat

Scores of elephants have died in a three-month heat wave that has dried up watering holes in western Zimbabwe, wildlife authorities said Wednesday.

Rangers in the Hwange National Park have counted 18 calves and 21 adolescent elephants among the dead animals, the state Parks and Wildlife Authority said in statement. Elephant carcasses were found mainly in large areas of bush surrounding three tourism and conservation camps in Zimbabwe's biggest nature preserve.

Since September, Hwange National Park has seen temperatures soar to above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 C), far higher than annual averages.

"Our information is that animals are dying of thirst right across the park," said Johnny Rodrigues, head of the independent Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force.

The Hwange National Park has no year-round rivers and little natural surface water, making it dependent on wells supplying artificial watering holes known as pans. An adult elephant needs nearly 50 gallons (200 liters) of water a day. But some watering holes have broken down because of scarce funding, the state wildlife authority said.

Rodrigues said voluntary animal welfare groups helped provide pumping equipment for some of the 60 watering holes in the preserve. Many now need replacement pumps and the underfunded state authority has failed to keep them maintained or buy spare parts and gasoline.

He said private conservation groups also installed solar pumps and windmills to draw water from the wells.

"There's very little wind at this time of year and the solar pumps can't provide the amount of water required by the number of animals reaching them" and overwhelming the pans, he said.

Park officials said more than 77 elephants have died. Some media reports said an estimated 100 elephants have died in the park.

An estimated 30,000 elephants live in the massive preserve, along with giraffes, lions and most other game animals.

Independent conservationists say the death toll of elephants, buffalo, zebra and antelope species could be larger in many inaccessible areas of the park. The reserve is 9,000 square miles (14,000 square kilometer) and adjacent to the western border with neighboring Botswana.

The state authority's statement said officials estimated that the death of the 77 elephants represents a loss of $1.5 million in "compensation value," the term used for animals lost to poaching or unforeseen deaths.

Watch the Six Most Memorable Moments of the GOP Debate (The Atlantic Wire)

The draw of all these Republican debates is the chance to see how the candidates act unscripted, and Tuesday night we learned that under pressure, some forget their name while others spill state secrets. We've collected the best video clips from the foreign policy-focused event, hosted by CNN and two conservative think tanks.

Mitt Romney forgets his name

?

When Wolf Blitzer introduced himself at the start of the debate, he said, "I'm Wolf Blitzer, and yes, that's my real name" -- a reference to a joke dates back at least to a Saturday Night Live skit from the first Gulf War. But Romney thought that was pretty funny, so when it was his turn to introduce himself, he said, "I'm Mitt Romney and yes, Wolf, that's also my first name." Except it isn't! It's Willard.

Michelle Bachmann releases state secrets?

?

When Bachmann said Pakistan had 15 vulnerable nuclear sites, and six had been been attacked by terrorists, National Journal's Yochi J. Dreazen noticed that no public official has ever revealed those attacks before. Bachmann sits on the House Intelligence Committee -- did she reveal classified information? It's not a great sign for Bachmann that the alternative theory is that she's made those figures up, as she has a history of making factually inaccurate statements.

Herman Cain forgets Wolf Blitzer's name

?

When Blitzer asked Cain whether he'd adopt profiling policy like Santorum, Cain responded, "No Blitz, that's oversimplifying it." Ron Paul scoffed, though not at the name mistake. Cain goes on to insist his "targeted profiling" is not the same as racial profiling, but gradually his flub sinks in. "I'm sorry, Blitz, I meant Wolf, okay? Blitz, Wolf... Since we're on a blitz debate, I'll apologize..."

Newt Gingrich risks angering conservative voters on immigration

?

Gingrich?came out against breaking up families of illegal immigrants who've been here for decades, which, yes, is considered a major policy shift these days. "I'm prepared to take for saying let's be humane in enforcing the law," Gingrich said.

'Lethal' radiation doses can be treated with drugs

Mice can survive lethal effects of high radiation doses that are usually fatal when given a double-drug therapy ? even when they get the drugs 24 hours after exposure.

Because these drugs are known to be safe in people, it could be worth stockpiling them in preparation for a nuclear accident or terrorist attack, say the researchers behind the new study.

High doses of radiation harm the body, partly by damaging rapidly dividing cells, such as those in the intestine. The damage leaves the intestine leaky, allowing harmful bacteria to escape into the bloodstream ? consequently antibiotics may be used to treat individuals exposed to radiation.

Eva Guinan and Ofer Levy at Harvard Medical School and their colleagues have identified another approach to treatment involving a protein known as bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI), which plays a role in the immune response to the harmful bacteria from the intestine.

Guinan and Levy's team studied 48 people who were receiving radiation doses in preparation for a bone marrow transplant. Following radiation exposure, levels of BPI fell to an average of 71 times below normal levels. In 37 of the transplant patients the protein was undetectable. The team say this is probably due to damage to the bone marrow, which leaves it unable to produce enough of the white blood cells that normally encourage BPI production.

Survival boost

The team then used the information in the treatment of mice given a typically lethal dose of radiation. A day after exposure, some mice were given the oral antibiotic fluoroquinolone while some mice were given a combination of fluoroquinolone and injections of BPI. A third group had no treatment at all.

Most of the untreated mice died within 30 days. As expected, the antibiotic boosted the survival rate: around 40 per cent of the mice given the antibiotic were still alive after 30 days ? but survival rates jumped to almost 80 per cent in the mice given the combination therapy.

The two drugs are already known to be safe in healthy and sick humans. A radiation treatment based on the two is likely to be practical because both drugs can be stored for long periods of time and the mouse study suggests they would be effective even if administered 24 hours after exposure, says Levy. "Maybe there needs to be a stockpile of BPI in case, God forbid, there was another FukushimaMovie Camera," he says.

Don Jones at the University of Leicester, UK, finds the study "very exciting". "The therapy looks to be very effective at mitigating the effects of total body irradiation," he says.

Libya can try Gaddafi son if conditions right: ICC (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? The International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor said on Wednesday that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi can be tried inside Libya provided there is a judicial process that does not shield him from international justice.

Speaking at a news conference in Tripoli, Luis Moreno-Ocampo said it was very important for Libya that Saif al-Islam, the captured son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, is tried inside Libya. The ICC earlier this year issued a warrant for Saif al-Islam's arrest on charges of crimes against humanity.

NASA flies robotic lander prototype to new heights

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2011) ? NASA successfully completed the final flight in a series of tests of a new robotic lander prototype at the Redstone Test Center's propulsion test facility on the U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. Data from this test series will aid in the design and development of a new generation of small, smart, versatile robotic landers capable of performing science and exploration research on the surface of the moon or other airless bodies in the solar system, such as asteroids or the planet Mercury.

Since early October, the Robotic Lander Development Project at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville has subjected the lander prototype to a series of more complex outdoor flight tests maneuvers. The team steadily increased the lander's flight profile, starting by hovering the lander -- dubbed Mighty Eagle -- at 3 feet, then 30 feet and finally a record 100-foot flight test.

During the 100-foot flight test, the lander autonomously flew for 30 seconds. The Mighty Eagle ascended to 100 feet, hovered and then demonstrated the equivalent of an autonomous landing on the lunar surface. The final maneuver simulated the required descent approach by horizontally translating 30 feet while descending and landing on target. The test demonstrated the lander's ability to maneuver to avoid hazards before performing a safe, controlled landing.

"The successful completion of the Mighty Eagle lander prototype provides a high level of confidence in our flight system design which significantly reduces cost and schedule," said Julie Bassler, Robotic Lander Development project manager at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. "Our combined NASA and contractor team went from the drawing board to successfully flight testing an autonomous, closed-loop, lander prototype system in less than two years," she said. "Mighty Eagle has performed well, demonstrating precision ascents, descents and horizontal translation flights to prove the lander can control itself and land safely."

"Our small team has worked tirelessly to develop a robust lander system," said Dr. Greg Chavers, lead systems engineer for the Robotic Lander Development Project at Marshall. "The prototype lander has the capability to launch, descend and land safely on its own -- without a man in the loop -- demonstrating the lander's autonomous and reusable test capability. Our team has matured the lander's guidance, navigation and control algorithms, which provided stable control of the lander, even through light wind and rain."

Mighty Eagle is a three-legged prototype that resembles an actual flight lander design. It is 4 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter and weighs 700 pounds when fueled with 90 percent hydrogen peroxide.

The lander receives its commands from an onboard computer that activates its 16 onboard thrusters -- 15 pulsed and one gravity cancelling thruster -- to carry it to a controlled landing using a pre-programmed flight profile. The prototype serves as a platform to develop and test algorithms, sensors, avionics, software, landing legs, and integrated system elements to support autonomous landings on airless planetary bodies, where aero-braking and parachutes are not options.

The next test phase of the test series is set to resume in early Spring when weather is more favorable for outdoor flight test. This new test series will test enhanced navigation capabilities.

Development and integration of the lander prototype is a cooperative endeavor led by the Robotic Lunar Lander Development Project at the Marshall Center; Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory; and the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation, which includes the Science Applications International Corporation, Dynetics Corp., Teledyne Brown Engineering Inc., and Millennium Engineering and Integration Company, all of Huntsville.

The project is partnered with the U.S. Army's Test and Evaluation Command's test center located at Redstone Arsenal. The Redstone Test Center is one of six centers under the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command and has been a leading test facility for defense systems since the 1950s. Utilizing an historic test site at the arsenal, the project is leveraging the Redstone Test Center's advanced capability for propulsion testing.

Anti-Romney or pro-Gingrich? (The Ticket)

How many of you know that Romneys 20 year job at Bain Capital was as a Wall Street Hedge Fund Manager? All occupy issues aside (what ever they are?) Wall Street is not Capitalism. Its Banks. Socialist minded Investment Bankers. Isnt it bad enough that Wall Street accepted Obama as one of them - a Socialist - and financed his campaign? Do we really want a Wall Street Guy as President? ...... SAY "NO" TO ROMNEY

He looks Presidential. He talks Presidential. He has an inside track to the Wall Street Bankers who got all the Stimulus money.... He is a ringer for the same team that funded Obama. I bet he gets the Rep Nomination then throws the fight.... Oh here's one more... I heard Romneys Father was a Union Rep... another Socialist Group that funded Obama and Romney has inroads there too. I say he is on the same team as Obama and I dont want him.

Simply put. A lot of his Bain deals were co-financed by Goldman Sachs, who happen to be his largest campaign contributors currently. A Wall Street guy for sure. He is not going to be good for the country.

It is the conflicted interests between Wall Street and the White House that bothers me. Absolute power corrupts absolutely

Pres. Reagan said the first loss of freedom will come in the form of Socialized Medicine. Its really neat-o how both Romney and Obama made that their main priorities.

Gunman barricaded in building at Colorado air base (AP)

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. ? An airman armed with a pistol barricaded himself in a building at an Air Force base in Colorado that controls all GPS satellites, but operations haven't been disrupted, officials said Monday.

The building was evacuated, and no shots were fired and no one was injured, said Schriever Air Force Base spokeswoman Jennifer Thibault.

A negotiator and a SWAT team from the El Paso County Sheriff's Department were on scene at the Air Force's request, said Air Force Lt. Marie Denson.

Thibault said the airman is a member of a security squadron and is armed with his own handgun. Officials were investigating how he got the weapon past security and onto the base.

The airman is in a building where personnel prepare for deployments, Thibault said.

Control rooms for GPS and other military satellites are in a separate, heavily protected inner compound surrounded by fences and staffed with armed guards.

The gunman faces a discharge over a matter in civilian court, but no other details were available, Denson said. He is still classified as being on active duty, she said.

The airman's name, rank and service history weren't immediately released.

The base about 60 miles south of Denver controls more than 60 military satellites.

Winners and Losers of the Deficit Supercommittee Deadlock (Time.com)

Jim Lo Scalzo / EPA

Jim Lo Scalzo / EPA

Democratic Senate Majority Leader from Nevada Harry Reid talks to reporters about Supercommittee negotiations after the Democrat's weekly leadership lunch in Washington, Nov. 8, 2011.

With the deficit supercommittee charged with finding $1.2 trillion in savings teetering on the brink of failure, Washington is embroiled in a high stakes round of recriminations. Depending on whom you listen to, everyone?s to blame and everyone?s blameless. Three months closer to an election year, Congress is proving every bit as dysfunctional as it was during the debt ceiling deal that created the supercommittee in August, and looming primaries ? both presidential and congressional ? have put bipartisan compromise even farther out of reach. Really, there should be no shock that the committee has failed ? there were too many people who stood to benefit from its demise.

(MORE: In a Tea Party Universe, Visions of Supercommittee Success)

Congressional incumbents: If you?re, say, Senator Jon Tester, a Montana Democrat who has a tough reelection test ahead of him next November, what incentive would you have to vote for entitlement cuts, which would risk the support Native American tribes, seniors, lower income voters ? the trifecta of constituents that are pivotal to winning statewide in Montana. On the flip side, if you?re, say, Rep. Paul Gosar, an Arizona Republican freshman of the Tea Party persuasion, voting for increased revenue could leave you open not just to a primary challenge, but also vulnerable to a conservative Democrat in the general election. Ultimately, the political calculus was against any deal, and any member of Congress facing a close race can breathe a sigh of relief now that the supercommittee has deadlocked.

Congressional challengers: That said, new candidates for office have also been given a gift. Congress?s approval rating is near record lows and the supercommittee?s failure only serves to underline the hamstrung legislative process and the fact that those in office right now probably aren?t the ones who are going to fix it.

Democrats: As I noted?the day after the debt ceiling agreement, that deal wasn?t terrible for Democrats. Not only did they settle the 2012 budget with just $7 billion in non-defense discretionary cuts, but the likelihood of a supercommittee deadlock all but assured that Congress would pass tax reform in late 2012 or at the beginning of 2013. Democrats have long sought to raise revenue through tax reform without having to cut entitlement benefits, and now they will likely get their wish. The consequence of the supercommittee?s failure is that $1.2 trillion in cuts will automatically happen in January 2013, not coincidentally at the same time George W. Bush?s tax cuts expire. Those two events will create powerful incentives for tax reform.

(MORE: Amid Supercommittee Wranlging, Tax Reform Gains Momentum)

President Obama: On his tour of Asia, Obama wisely stayed about as far away as he could get from the supercommittee train wreck. After getting burned by being too close to the debt ceiling negotiations, Obama learned his lesson and let Congress embarrass itself. The supercommittee?s failure to reach an agreement only helps his strategy of running against Congress, as Harry Truman did in 1948. Now, he can spend the next year blaming congressional dysfunction for the country?s woes.

Americans for Tax Reform?s Grover Norquist: The deadlock proves his power to hold GOP politicians to his anti-tax pledge is as potent as ever. For all the stories about how Norquist was done and how lawmakers were finding ways around it, Republicans? fear of raising new revenue and crossing Norquist was one of the biggest contributing factors to the committee?s failure.

(MORE: When Grover Norquist Says ?Jump??)

Still, the supercommittee?s impending failure will not be without its casualties.

House freshmen: Whether this debacle was their fault or not, the new, largely Republicans class elected in 2010 has come to represent the congressional logjam and they are suffering for it. They are already running into fundraising trouble?and House Democrats outraised their GOP counterparts nearly two-to-one last month. Passing a bipartisan deal that satisfied the markets and reduced the deficit could?ve done wonders to reform their obstructionist image. Alas, it was not to be. So, while running for reelection having raised taxes would?ve been hard, this group is doubly screwed as they also bear the blunt of the blame for the sorry state of affairs.

The American people: Deficits remain a great threat to national security, as Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, once put it. The committee?s failure risks a stock market dive amid a widening European crisis and another potential downgrade of America?s bond rating status. Small business lending could get tougher?because of this debacle, the recession could drag out and unemployment could continue to stagnate. There are probably a dozen more winners and losers that I could name on the political spectrum. But the fact of the matter is, whatever short-term political gains anyone gets out of this, in the long run the American people lose.
