Sooner or later, every parent could hear: ?Please, can I have a puppy??

Instead, to dodge the issue, parents should consider whether their families are ready for your pet, says Sharon Bergen, Director of excellence in learning, Learning Corporation, care of the nation?s leading early childhood and the ?education.

Bergen suggests that parents weigh the pros and cons of adding a pet at home, before accepting the request of a child. ?A pet can teach children responsibility and become a wonderful addition to a family or it can be a burden,? she said. Bergen recommends families consider the following before making a decision.

Who will take care of pets? Families should agree in advance who will be responsible for feeding, walking, bathing and cleaning up after animals.

Do you have a space for a pet? Families living in apartments or homes may prefer a cat, a bird or a fish, rather than a farmer. Check the library or online to learn more about the different types and breeds of animals to determine the most appropriate for your family.

Owning a pet can be time consuming and expensive. Family members must understand that they may have to give up other activities to adequately take care of your pet. If the opportunity seems too daunting, parents can suggest you wait until the child is old enough to help treat an animal.

Bergen recommended that all animals meet the family before deciding to take home. Owning a pet is a long-term, so think carefully before adopting a new family member with skin.
