Prepare For Weather Challenges, Commissioner Advises | :::?The ...

The Rivers Commissioner

for Information and Communication, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, has called on residents in Rivers to brace for the challenges expected from global warming.

Semenitari made the call in Port Harcourt on Tuesday in a paper she presented as a guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt G.R.A.

She said that weather experts had predicted that the sea level would rise and that there would be more flooding in the state between September and October.

The commissioner also said that the state government had informed the people about the impending effects of global warming on the state.

She urged Rotarians to assist check the effects of carbon footprints from their homes and offices.

?Rotarians can play a role in this regard. They can reduce the carbon they emit from homes and offices and also plant trees to ensure a green environment.?

Semenitari said that checking global warming was a collective responsibility of the people and government.

?We have to collectively check global warming because it has affected rural life like fishing and other economic activities.

?If we do not act fast, global warming can lead to diminished food and water supply. That is why government is intervening through ensuring sustainable development in social, economic and political sectors.?

She urged Rotarians to lead the campaign for a safer environment by sensitising the people to plant trees, emit less carbon prints at homes and offices and keeping environment clean.
