Taking A Defensive Approach Against Food Allergies Can Save ...

As years pass by, more and more people become affected by allergies pertaining to certain foods. This is a worldwide phenomenon, and in America alone, more than eleven million people have food allergies that could potentially be fatal. It is estimated that over 200 people die each year from allergic reactions to food in the United States. Furthermore, there are approximately 30,000 emergency room visits each year that are attributed to food allergies. It is impossible not to be stupefied by the figures detailed above.

The press has made quite a hubbub in recent months about food allergies and their effects on individuals. This has not slipped the watch of the U.S. government, as National Anaphylaxis Day was recently launched by the White House to heighten the masses? awareness about how certain foods can be deleterious to certain individuals. Anaphylaxis is a potentially fatal condition, the worst and most destructive type of allergic reactions to food.

Food allergies are very bothersome to think about, especially since the chances of an accurate diagnosis are next to nil. More often than not, an individual does not realize that they have a food allergy until they are having a reaction. As the person invariably writhes in agony, that puts to waste any preventative measures that could have been devised. Allergic reactions must not only be prevented, but they must also be treated with extreme care and caution, as nobody can really say for sure how serious an allergic reaction is, or how serious it could become.

The most common food allergies individuals experience include, but are not limited to nut allergies (e.g. peanuts and walnuts), shellfish allergies (e.g. crab, lobster, etc.) and dairy allergies (e.g. cream, milk, cheese, eggs, etc.) Now take a moment to consider how many prepared foods contain one or more of the above ingredients. Too often, people who suffer from intense food allergies have to deal with the vagaries of chance when eating their meals.

There are few ways to protect one self from having an allergic reaction. The best strategy is simply to be prepared for the worst. The preparation of the food that causes the allergies may innately be more important than the food itself. For example, if somebody is allergic to peanuts, then even an infinitesimal trace of peanut could cause an illness that could put his/her life in jeopardy. If you are dining out, be sure to inform the restaurant of any allergies you suffer from. Food preparers in the kitchen must be judicious and very careful to avoid the possibility of cross-contamination.

As mentioned above, there is no way to determine how severe an allergic reaction might be. The primary weapon, really, against food allergies is epinephrine. It is absolutely necessary to have epinephrine ready for those situations that may jeopardize your health, as it may come in handy as a life-saver if really needed.
