THESSALONIKI, Greece ? Greek prime minister George Papandreou is chairing a cabinet meeting in this northern Greek city a day after pledging in a keynote speech that Greece will meet ambitious savings targets despite a deepening recession this year.
Greek media report that the cabinet is discussing extra measures, including new taxes, in order to meet the 2011 deficit targets agreed with Greece's lenders.
Papandreou was set to give a press conference at 1 p.m. local (1000 GMT) but it has been pushed back to an undetermined time.
Police say nine police and ten protesters were injured and nine protesters arrested during violent clashes. More than 25,000 people ? from taxi-drivers to sports fans ? joined a wave of anti-austerity protests.
