I've often wondered this while canoeing in the sea; having come across a few and been worried about disturbing a young brood. If they had similar mentalities to cats or more interestingly domestic cats (as I am more familiar with) then perhaps I could learn the mentality of the sea lion thereby adding some predictability to its natural behaviour.
