Florida Home Companion prepared these definitions based off a chart that appeared in The Costco Connection magazine with some additional terms and definitions. It was a very well-written chart and it explains the difference between different types of home compare and care at facilities. For example, most people do not realize there are several levels elder care at home or the difference between an assisted living facility in Orlando and a rehab facility in Orlando. Florida Home Companion expanded on this information for the Central Florida and Orlando area.

Home-companion
Non-medical assistance in your home (cleaning, cooking, transportation, companionship)
Nurse Registry
Skilled care in your own home performed by a Certified Nurses Aid, a nurse oversees the CNA?s. These services often provide home companion care services as well such as cleaning, cooking, transportation, and grooming assistance along with skilled care services such as bathing, heavy grooming, and assistance with daily activities.
Adult Day Care Center
Community based care center offering limited care, food and activities, patients live in more of a center with other non-related patients.
Healthcare and transport often available for an extra fee.
Adult Family Homes
Takes place in a residential home licensed for 6 or fewer non-related residents, room & board is provided along with supervision, some personal care, social services and possibly other services for a fee.
Continuing Care Residential Communities
Housing community with a full range of services with both independent living and skilled nursing.
Assisted Living Facility
Typically consisting of individual apartments, many times has a full-time staff that put on activities, make the meals in the dining facility, and they offer limited healthcare sometimes it comes with the service and sometimes an extra fee.
Skilled Nursing Home
Full nursing or rehabilitive care, 24-hour staff both certified and licensed.
Rehab Facility
Full nursing and rehabilitive care, often to treat an injury of some sort, many patients leave after treatment and become well enough to live at home again.
Hospice and Palliative-care programs
This kind of elder care typically takes place in the home. The care focuses on a person?s last phase of life where the goal is to offer comfort, relief of pain, and to help the patient cope with symptoms and/or emotional stess. The patient typically is past the point where a cure is available.
