Heroic Hurricane Irene Rescues Followed Path of Storm (ContributorNetwork)

Residents from North Carolina to New York were rescued from high winds, huge amounts of rain and floodwaters as Hurricane Irene pounded the eastern seaboard of the United States. Unfortunately, the Miami Herald reports 18 deaths have been occurred over six states affected by the storm.

Amid the destruction of the first hurricane to make landfall in 2011, there were some brave rescues witnessed up and down the East Coast.

Sail Boat Aground

A couple and their cat were rescued near Virginia Beach when they tried to outrun the storm and then got caught in high winds and rough waves. The Virginia Pilot reports the couple was on their way to Annapolis, Md., when they got caught in severe weather. Their boat ran aground in Ocean View.

Rescue swimmers from the Norfolk Fire & Rescue swam out to the boat in order to attach a rescue line. When lifejackets were given to the unidentified couple, they grabbed the line and came ashore. One of the rescuers clutched their cat underneath their lifejacket and brought it to safety as Hurricane Irene barreled down on the coast of Virginia on Saturday.

Staten Island

Staten Island near New York City is a low-lying area that has thousands of residents. Hurricane Irene caused problems when flooding inundated residents and the New York City Fire Department staged a massive rescue operation in the early morning hours on Sunday.

In total, 64 people were rescued including three babies. Fifty fire personnel used inflatable boats to rescue people from standing water that was reaching up to five feet along 21 homes. The rescue lasted three hours and everyone was fine. The rescue proved once again that New York City has the best public protection personnel on the planet. The New York Daily News reports another two dozen people were rescued in flooded cars in the city itself.

Five Boaters Caught

Five boaters were caught in rising floodwaters in Vineland, N.J. Video from the rescue shows a small capsized boats and rescue personnel on a city street. The relieved boaters then smiled for the television camera afterward and were thankful to be alive.

The men were saved on Sunday morning after Hurricane Irene already came through and pummeled the region. WPXI reports there were other rescues in Pennsylvania where people were evacuated from an apartment complex in Somerset when they smelled natural gas and first responders got them out of the building. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has also been saving pets. One 10-week old puppy was rescued from someone's patio after the dog was tied to furniture with a shoelace.
