UN: Mexico most dangerous in Americas for journos (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? A United Nations report says Mexico remains the most dangerous country for journalists in North America, and the fifth most dangerous worldwide.

The joint assessment by press experts for the U.N. and the Organization of American States says that 13 journalists have been killed in Mexico so far in 2011, and 70 in total since 2000.

The U.N. Human Rights Council's investigator on freedom of expression said Mexico was fifth worldwide in the number of journalists killings.

The OAS representative said Monday the Mexican government should implement a plan to protect journalists.

Mexico's Assistant Foreign Relations Secretary says the government has taken steps to help protect reporters.
