Sony's?BDPS185, now $64.99 at Future Shop, ?doesn't just usher an era of affordable?Blu-Ray players, it also brings SmartTV-like features and a variety of free streaming content from the Internet to any HDTV you may have at home.
?
One of the best purchases I made this year, the BDS185?Blu-Ray player effectively replaces my old Samsung standalone Blu-Ray player and my AppleTV used mostly for Netflix.ca. I have a sizeable collection of DVDs, a growing collection of Blu-Ray discs and have ripped a number of shows and movies on a backup drive or on various USB sticks for playing on various computers.
?
?
Arc-shaped, much like the PlayStation 3, the much smaller BDS185 Blu-Ray player is compact and light, yet has that high-quality feel complete with a plastic finish that feels like brushed aluminum. The only issue some may have with the case design is that you can't stack anything on top of the player.
?
The Blu-Ray player looks good, fits in nicely with any existing home theatre set-up, and is affordable enough that you can put one in every room. For apartment dwellers such as myself, with limited space and using a four-year or older HDTV with only two HDMI ports, this is a perfect multifunctional solution.
?
It hooked up easily to my 32-inch Samsung HDTV via HDMI. And since it requires an Ethernet connection to the Internet, I used one of my free ports on my Linksys router to plug the BDPS185?directly.
?
I was impressed at how quickly the Blu-Ray player started up and also by how many options were presented to me.
?
Anyone who has used the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Portable's XMB navigation will feel right at home navigating the BDPS185?which after a quick software update, showed a variety of streaming options from online services.
?
Netflix connectivity is very good, picture quality is clear and possibly better that what I experienced on various set-top boxes.
?
Canadians don't get Pandora or Hulu but there's quite a selection of online streaming content including YouTube, Crunchyroll and others. Of course, Sony's own Music and Video Unlimited services are on board as well as some web services like Facebook, Twitter and others which really makes your HDTV a SmartTV just by having the?BDPS185 hooked up.
?
The?BDPS185 played various video files off of USB sticks including MP4 and MK4 formats. DVD's are upscaled in quality to look more like Blu-Ray videos but results will vary, older DVDs seem to look a little washed out but newer DVDs have a sharper look and generally better contrast.
?
It is as a Blu-Ray player that the BDPS185 really shines. Load times are fast and navigating through the menus and options is easy, anyone can figure them out.
?
I also like the remote control that comes with the?BDPS185. Not only does it offer a clear layout and a range of options for all the Blu-Ray, DVD and the streaming apps, it can also be programmed to control your HDTV's power, input selection, volume and channels, making it convenient to get the?BDPS185 up and running.
?
?
Powerful, portable and polished the Sony?BDPS185 is an ideal choice for anyone holding out for an affordable but fill-featured Blu-Ray player that can also stream content and play DVD's as well as serve up Internet content.?
