Police searching for Cottonwood Heights credit union robber

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC 4 News) -The search is on Thursday night for a man who tried to rob a credit union in Cottonwood Heights. The gunman tied up one of the workers then got away. Police need your help to track him down.

Surveillance cameras captured photos of the man early Thursday morning. Police believe he tried to rob the American Family of Credit Unions on Fort Union Boulevard in Cottonwood Heights. A worker who opened the branch had no idea the robber was waiting for her, lurking in the bushes.

"He grabbed her as she opened the door, and entered the bank and tied her up," said Sgt. Gary Young, Cottonwood Heights Police Dept.

Officers said he pulled out a gun, demanded money, but when they couldn't open the vault he took off. Police believe the footprints in the snow show the robber ran towards a Mexican restaurant across the street. We talked to Lee Llewellyn who runs a storage company practically next door and he said he can see why the thief targeted the branch.

"It's just like clockwork, you can set your watch to when they show up and open that bank and there's a lot of bushes, so it's very easy for someone to hide in the those bushes, every morning the car pulls in same time," said Lee Llewellyn, Manager, Stor-N-Lock Self Storage.

Police agree the robber likely has been planning the heist for at least several days.

"It's well planned and well carried out, fortunately no one got hurt, fortunately he didn't get any money," said Young.

Parents who drop their kids off at a nearby day care find it scary.

"You always hear about things like this, but you always think it's somewhere else and having it right in your backyard is kind of unnerving," said Paul Springer, father.

And for an America First Credit Union down the street. The branch manager said it's a reminder to not let your guard down.

"We kind of have to make sure we're vigilant in our surroundings into what's going on," said Debbie Hardcastle, American First Credit Union Cottonwood Heights Branch Manager.

Police hope to use that same vigilance to find the man who committed Thursday's attempted robbery.

Here?s who police are looking for ?

Police said the robber is either Hispanic or Filipino.
He's 5-foot-6, with a medium build, in his late 20's or early 30's.
