How I use my iPhone and iPad as a college math teacher

As a college math instructor, I am a huge advocate for technology use in the classroom and regularly use my iPhone and iPad to enhance the learning experience for my students. Between using apps on the classroom projector, enabling Guided Access for student devices during exams, and preparing content at home, my iPhone and iPad are essential tools for me as a teacher.

Email

As an adjunct (part-time) instructor, I am not required to hold office hours, nor do I have a space to do so if I wanted. To make up for this, I encourage my students to contact me through email for questions and hints. So the first, and most obvious, way I use my iPhone is for emailing my students. I love being able to respond to my students at any time, because it shows them that I care, and it ultimately makes me more approachable.

Noteshelf

Since my response to most emails require the use of mathematical symbols, I turn to my iPad and Noteshelf to handwrite my responses to eliminate any confusion for my students. My stylus of choice is the Pogo Sketch Pro. Once I have my response written up nicely, I email it to the student as a PDF. Then I post it to my website for other students to benefit from, as well.

Quick Graph

During class, I use the projector combined with a 30-pin to VGA Adapter and my iPad to graph equations with Quick Graph. I could use my TI-89 graphing calculator, but Quick Graph is a much faster and better looking option. It's even better than using Grapher on my MacBook Air. My students are always impressed and often download Quick Graph right there in class to mimic me and follow along.

Guided Access

Speaking of calculators, for courses where I allow calculator use on quizzes and exams, Guided Access lets me allow students with iPhone and iPads to use their device as a calculator. At the start of the exam, I lock them into a calculator app that I approve of; then when they turn in the exam, I grant them full-access to their device by entering the password. My students really like this because it's one less device to buy and carry around.

Notability

After taking a quiz or exam, students immediately start asking for solutions so they can see how they did and to study for their final exam. That's where Notability comes in. As much as I love Noteshelf, it doesn't support PDF annotation, so I turn to Notability for writing up solutions by importing my files directly from Dropbox. Another option would be to write on a physical exam, then use Scanner Pro to "scan" it into PDF form, but Notability allows me to make use of rich colors and crisp pen strokes, and easily fix any errors I make. Once the solutions are written up, I post them to my website as a downloadable PDF.

WordPress

In addition to using my website to give students access to important PDF files, I also use it to post homework assignments and any other important announcements relevant to the course. Sometimes I do this on a Mac, and other times I use WordPress on my iPhone or iPad.

Doodlecast Pro

Before I upgraded to a Bamboo tablet and Camtasia 2 on my Mac, I used Doodlecast Pro on my iPad to record videos for difficult topics we were learning. Combined with my Pogo Sketch Pro, I was able to easily post instructional videos to YouTube that my students found very valuable.

Numbers

With teaching, comes grading. To keep track of my students' grades, I use Numbers on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone. I primarily use my Mac, but if I need to update a student's grade in class, I will usually pull out my iPad and make the correction right there in front of the student. It's also great for those inevitable times when a student wants to know where they stand in the class right now.

PARIS (AP) ? A French mayor says Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knightley has said "oui" to rocker James Righton in a small wedding ceremony in southern France.

Aime Navello said Sunday the couple followed French tradition when he married them at the Mazan town hall on Saturday. Navello read the service in French and the couple responded in French and English. He said about 10 people were present.

Righton is keyboard player for the rock group Klaxons. He and Knightley got engaged a year ago.

Knightley first won notice for her role as a soccer-playing teenager in "Bend It Like Beckham."

She went on to star in the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies and was nominated for an Oscar for playing Elizabeth Bennet in an adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."

BEIRUT (AP) ? Israel's weekend airstrike on a military complex near the Syrian capital of Damascus killed at least 42 Syrian soldiers, a group of anti-regime activists said Monday, citing information from military hospitals.

The Syrian government has not released a death toll, but Syrian state media have reported casualties in Sunday's pre-dawn airstrike, Israel's third into Syria this year.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said about 150 soldiers are normally stationed in the area that was targeted, but that it was not clear how many were there at the time of the strike.

Rami Abdel-Rahman, the head of the group, said his sources at Syrian military hospitals gave him information on 42 Syrian soldiers killed in the Israeli attack.

Israel's government has not formally confirmed involvement in strikes on Syria.

However, Israeli officials said the attacks were meant to prevent advanced Iranian weapons from reaching Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, an ally of Syria and foe of Israel.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss covert military operations.

Israel on Monday signaled a return to "business as usual," with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arriving in China for a scheduled visit.

Syria and its patron Iran have hinted at possible retribution for the strikes, though the rhetoric in official statements has been relatively mild.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi warned Monday that Israel was "playing with fire," but gave no other suggestions of possible consequences, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

Syria's government called the attacks a "flagrant violation of international law" that has made the Middle East "more dangerous."

Israeli officials have indicated they will keep trying to block what they see as an effort by Iran to send sophisticated weapons to Lebanon's Hezbollah militia ahead of a possible collapse of Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Israel has repeatedly threatened to intervene in the Syrian civil war to stop the transfer of what it calls "game-changing" weapons to Hezbollah, a Syrian-backed group that battled Israel to a stalemate during a month-long war in 2006.

Since carrying out a lone airstrike in January that reportedly destroyed a shipment of anti-aircraft missiles headed to Hezbollah, Israel had largely stayed on the sidelines. That changed this weekend with the pair of airstrikes, including an attack near a military complex close to Damascus early Sunday that set off powerful explosions.

A senior Israeli official said both airstrikes targeted shipments of Fateh-110 missiles bound for Hezbollah. The Iranian-made guided missiles can fly deep into Israel and deliver powerful half-ton bombs with pinpoint accuracy.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a covert military operation.

Israeli defense officials have identified several strategic weapons that they say cannot be allowed to reach Hezbollah.

They include Syrian chemical weapons, the Iranian Fateh-110s, long-range Scud missiles, Yakhont missiles capable of attacking naval ships from the coast and Russian SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. Israel's airstrike in January destroyed a shipment of SA-17s meant for Hezbollah, according to U.S. officials.

Israeli officials said the Fateh-110s reached Syria last week. Friday's airstrike struck a Damascus airport where the missiles were being stored, while the second series of airstrikes early Sunday targeted the remnants of the shipment, which had been moved to three nearby locations, the officials said.

None of the Iranian missiles are believed to have reached Lebanon, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence assessment.

In launching the strikes, Israel took a gamble that Assad has little desire to open a new front with Israel when he is preoccupied with the survival of his regime.

Still, Israel was taking precautions. Israel's military deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket defense system to the north of the country Sunday.

"Alongside readiness and alertness, it's always good to prepare and train ? but there are no winds of war," the head of Israel's northern command, Maj. Gen. Yair Golan, told Israeli media.

On Monday afternoon, the Israeli military reported that two shells fired from Syria had landed in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. The military said the shelling appeared to be accidental spillover from the Syrian civil war and was not connected to tensions over the reported airstrikes.

Stray shelling and gunfire from the Syrian civil war has periodically landed in the Golan in recent months. The Israeli military believes most of these incidents have not specifically targeted Israel.

Tzahi Hanegbi, an Israeli lawmaker who is close to Netanyahu, said Monday that Israel's aim is to "keep advanced weapons from Hezbollah as soon as intentions are exposed and refrain from tension with Syria."

"So if there is activity, then it is only against Hezbollah and not against the Syrian regime," Hanegbi told Israel Radio. "In that context you must see the fact that Israel doesn't officially admit to its operations, and that the prime minister left yesterday for China and (there is) the feeling of business as usual."

Hezbollah fired some 4,000 rockets into Israel during the 2006 war, and Israel believes the group now has tens of thousands of rockets and missiles.

The attacks pose a dilemma for the embattled Assad regime.

If it fails to respond, it looks weak and opens the door to more airstrikes. But any military retaliation against Israel would risk dragging the Jewish state and its powerful army into a broader conflict. With few exceptions, Israel and Syria have not engaged in direct fighting in roughly 40 years.

The airstrikes come as Washington considers how to respond to indications the Syrian regime may have used chemical weapons in its civil war. President Barack Obama has described the use of such weapons as a "red line," and the administration is weighing its options.

The White House declined for a second day to comment directly on Israel's air strikes in Syria, but said Obama believes Israel, as a sovereign nation, has the right to defend itself.

The uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011, quickly turning into an armed insurgency and then a civil war. More than 70,000 people have been killed and millions displaced, while Assad and those trying to topple him remain deadlocked on the battlefield.

local user config is deleted for roaming profiles

When running a local Domain server for a couple of PC's as i do.
The users local data is wiped on logging off , thus the preferences for this app and the download lists dissapear each time DUHH

can a different location be spacified for the config file and file lists on the command line so that this app can be used

PFT: Lombardi accepted gay players on his team

The ongoing debate about how a gay NFL player would be treated in the locker room has largely focused on the idea that times are changing, and that acceptance of a gay player would be a modern development. But it?s often overlooked that the ultimate example of the old-school football coach was also perfectly fine with having gay players on his team.

Multiple players who played for Vince Lombardi, the legendary former Packers and Redskins coach, say that he knew some of his players were gay, and that not only did he not have a problem with it, but he went out of his way to make sure no one else on his team would make it a problem.

In 1969, Lombardi?s Redskins included a running back named Ray McDonald, who in 1968 had been arrested for having sex with another man in public. In the Lombardi biography When Pride Still Mattered, author David Maraniss writes that Lombardi told his assistants he wanted them to work with McDonald to help him make the team, ?And if I hear one of you people make reference to his manhood, you?ll be out of here before your ass hits the ground.?

Lombardi?s daughter Susan told Ian O?Connor of ESPNNewYork.com that her father would have been thrilled to have a player like Jason Collins, the NBA center who publicly revealed this week that he is gay.

?My father was way ahead of his time,? Susan Lombardi said. ?He was discriminated against as a dark-skinned Italian American when he was younger, when he felt he was passed up for coaching jobs that he deserved. He felt the pain of discrimination, and so he raised his family to accept everybody, no matter what color they were or whatever their sexual orientation was. I think it?s great what Jason Collins did, because it?s going to open a lot of doors for people. Without a doubt my father would?ve embraced him, and would?ve been very proud of him for coming out.?

Dave Kopay, the first former NFL player to come out, also played on those 1969 Redskins, and he says that while he never told Lombardi, he believes Lombardi knew not only that Kopay was gay, but that Kopay and another Redskins player, Jerry Smith, were in a romantic relationship.

?Lombardi protected and loved Jerry,? Kopay told O?Connor.

Lombardi?s brother Harold was gay, and when Harold died in July of 2011 he was survived by his partner of 41 years ? meaning their relationship began just before Vince died in September of 1970. As noted by Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports, Vince knew Harold was gay and didn?t just believe in ?tolerance? but believed strongly that discrimination against gay people was wrong, just as he was angered when he saw mistreatment of his black players, or discrimination against his fellow Italian-Americans.

If a coach who was considered old-fashioned even by the standards of the 1960s accepted gay players in his locker room, the idea that gay players couldn?t be accepted in an NFL locker room in 2013 is both silly and sad.
