Higher sales boost Briscoe's profit forecast | Stuff.co.nz

Briscoe Group expects to report at least a nine per cent jump in annual net profit to more than $30 million, after sales rose more than three per cent to $452.7m.

The homeware and sporting goods retailer said fourth quarter sales reached $150.5m, up 3 per cent year-on-year.

While same-store sales for the full year were up 2.59 per cent, like for like sales for the fourth quarter rose a more modest 0.73 per cent.

Managing director Rod Duke said the group was "reasonably pleased with our sales, margins and overall performance for the final quarter of the year. Competition was fierce across most retail sectors but customers responded favourably to our marketing initiatives."

The group's larger homeware division - which includes Briscoes and Living and Giving stores - grew sales more than Rebel Sport stores over the year, boosting same-store sales by 3.63 per cent compared to a 0.49 per cent lift for Rebel.

But Rebel was coming off a high base, with sales the previous year significantly boosted by the Rugby World Cup.

Duke said the performance of Rebel Sport was a highlight given the extremely high comparative numbers it was up against.

"For Rebel Sport to post positive same store sales, increased gross profit margin and increased bottom line profit for the year is an achievement we are very proud of."

Sporting goods sales saw a bigger percentage increase than homeware goods sales in the fourth quarter, with same store sales up 2.14 per cent compared to 0.12 per cent. Duke said trading had been particularly strong immediately before and after Christmas. "We were especially pleased with the significant lift in sales achieved by our online stores across all three trading brands for December."

The group will report its audited full year result next month.

Shares in Briscoe Group last traded at $2.50 on the NZX.

Green Blog: The Enduring Effects of Ozone Depletion

One of the most sobering realities of climate change is that even if all greenhouse gas emissions? came to an abrupt halt tomorrow, climbing temperatures, rising seas and extreme weather would still be in the global forecast for perhaps hundreds of years because of the carbon dioxide already released into the atmosphere.

To get some perspective, the story of the ozone hole over Antarctica illustrates how even a relatively small perturbation in the atmosphere can have wide-reaching and long-lasting consequences.

International action was taken within just two years of the discovery of the patch of thinning ozone in 1985 to put an end to the release of chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs ? an organic compound that was used in refrigerants and aerosols and is the main culprit in ozone depletion. But scientists are still discovering the rippling effects of that CFC pollution decades later.

Two papers published online on Thursday in the journal Science highlight how the hole in the ozone layer, which is beginning to recover because of limits imposed on CFCs, is influencing major wind patterns, ocean circulation, concentrations of carbon in the atmosphere? and even rainfall in the Amazon.

Sukyoung Lee and Steven Feldstein, professors at Penn State, provide evidence that the depletion of the ozone layer, even more than greenhouse gas emissions, is contributing to the observed movement of the southern jet stream toward the pole. This leads, among other effects, to unusual rainfall patterns in the subtropics.

Just how the hole in the ozone causes a shift in the southern jet stream is not well understood.? Generally speaking, however, ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation and therefore warms the atmosphere.

A decline in ozone therefore leads to less absorption and less heating, which cools the polar lower stratosphere. This has an impact on the winds in the troposphere ? the lowest 10 kilometers, or six miles, of the atmosphere.

In the same issue of Science, Darryn Waugh, a climate scientist at Johns Hopkins University, and colleagues present research ?showing that the hole in the ozone layer and its effects on wind patterns are in turn amplifying ocean currents that move surface water from the pole deeper into the ocean. As the water moves toward the Equator, it brings water from deep in the ocean up to the surface at the pole.?

Dr. Waugh tracked concentrations of CFC-12 to determine how recently water had been at the ocean?s surface.

?The water from deep in the ocean may not have seen the surface for hundreds of years,? Dr. Waugh said. ?This ?old? water is very carbon-rich, from dead organic matter that sinks to the bottom of the ocean.?

When water that is already high in carbon dioxide is pulled to the surface, the ocean in this area absorbs less carbon

?Is it good?? Is it bad? I guess that depends whether you care more about preventing ocean acidification or reducing atmospheric carbon,? Dr. Waugh said. ?Probably we should care about both. What is certain is that it?s having a significant impact on the carbon cycle.?

Around 40 percent of the absorption of carbon into the ocean has been thought to occur at the high southern latitudes, he noted, which makes this significant.

Last winter, the ozone hole was smaller than it had been for a long time. It may fully recover by 2060.

But the studies underline how even the quick international response to the threat back in the 1980s could not prevent decades of damage from continuing to unfold.

Business Name Changes: 7 Legal Reminders - Free Enterprise

Research In Motion has officially changed its business name to BlackBerry, after its once-ubiquitous product. Will this corporate name change help save the struggling company and revive BlackBerry sales?

That's yet to be seen. After all, how many people even realized that Research In Motion was the name of the BlackBerry maker in the first place? As many in the business world have ditched their BlackBerry devices in droves, it's unclear who even cares at this point.

But desperate times call for desperate measures, and changing a business' name can potentially pay off -- though a company has to jump through a lot of legal hoops to make it official.

If you're hoping to rebrand yourself like BlackBerry is trying to do, here are seven legal reminders:

  1. Consider Other Business' Trademarks. You don't want to take a name that is already being used, the Small Business Administration advises. This can lead to confusion and potential lawsuits.

  2. Check Domain Names. Even if the business name you want is available, the corresponding Internet domain name may not be. You can try to buy these off the owner, or go with a different name -- but again, make sure you're not infringing on a domain name trademark.

  3. Notify the State. Most states have their own procedures for changing business names. You'll probably have to pay a small fee, and the state will make sure the name is not already in use.

  4. Update Your Business Documents and Accounts. You'll want to notify everyone you do business with, from suppliers to banks, of your business name change so that they can make the appropriate changes.

  5. Tell the IRS. Let the federal and state tax agencies know of the name change. There are specific procedures you will need to follow depending upon your business structure.

  6. Change Your Advertising. Let your customers know of the name change and update all your ads and listings.

  7. Revise Your "DBA" Name. If you previously filed a "Doing Business As" with your local government (also known as a fictitious business name), you'll need to revise it.

If you have questions regarding changing your business name, you may want to speak with an experienced business attorney.

Chicago shooting: A case of 'mistaken identity'?

Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teenager, was shot on Tuesday by a bullet police believe was intended for someone else. Gun violence in Chicago appears to be on the rise. In the meantime, legislators discussed gun laws in Washington on Wednesday.

A 15-year-old Chicago?girl who performed at President?Barack Obama's inauguration last week was shot to death in a city park in what police think was a case of "mistaken identity" related to a gang turf war.

"Mistaken identity -- wrong place at the wrong time," Chicago?Police?Superintendent?Garry McCarthy?said at a press conference on Wednesday, a day after the shooting that killed?Hadiya Pendleton?and injured another teen. The press conference was broadcast by CLTV.

McCarthy said police have been interviewing witnesses who were standing near Pendleton in a park on the city's South Side. He said police were making progress in the investigation.

"I don't want this to be a three-week or a three-month investigation," said McCarthy, who was in Washington earlier this week addressing gun control. "I want this closed now ... I want that kid off the street," he said, referring to the killer. Police believe a handgun was used.

Pendleton, a sophomore at Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep, had performed at the inauguration with her school band, according to local media reports. News of her death near Obama's old home in the Kenwood neighborhood came before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee began hearings on gun control on Wednesday.

Gun violence in Chicago?has been in the national spotlight over the past year, with 506 murders in 2012, an increase of 17 percent over the previous year. So far in January, there have been 42 homicides and 157 shootings, according to Chicago?police.

Obama spokesman?Jay Carney?was asked about Pendleton's death Wednesday. He said the prayers of the president and the first lady were with the girl's family.

"The president has more than once, when he talks about gun violence in American, referred not just to the horror of?Newtown?or?Aurora?or?Virginia Tech?or Oak Creek, but to shootings on the corner in Chicago?and other parts of the country," said Carney. "And this is just another example of the problem that we need to deal with."

McCarthy said that an $11,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the capture of Pendleton's killer.

Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, shot in the head in a 2011 mass shooting, made an emotional plea before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday for action to curb U.S. gun violence, but a?National Rifle Association?executive said new gun laws have failed in the past and would fail again.

Giffords opened testimony at the first congressional hearing on gun violence since the Dec. 14 massacre in which a gunman shot dead 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in?Newtown,?Connecticut.

Responding to outrage across the country following that incident, Obama and other Democrats have asked?Congress?to pass the largest package of gun restrictions in decades.

Speaking at the news conference in Chicago, Father Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest known for his activism against gun violence, compared the Chicago?shootings to?Newtown.

"This is?Sandy Hook. This is?Connecticut. This is?Newtown, right here. We have to be just as outraged," Pfleger said.
