Bazaar editor in chief picks mag's 'Greatest Hits' (AP)

NEW YORK ? As editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar, Glenda Bailey has seen some pretty fantastic things ? "epic moments," she calls them.

In her 10 years at the helm of the magazine, she has overseen fancy photo shoots with A-list stars, insider moments with top designers and the times the magazine hits the zeitgeist just right. Bailey highlights many of them in a new book about her decade in charge, "Harper's Bazaar: Greatest Hits," and in an interview with The Associated Press, she listed her favorites:

_Demi Moore's 2010 cover, where she shared the coveted front-page real estate with a giraffe. Moore wore a dress and the 10-inch Armadillo heels from Alexander McQueen's last collection on a staircase to nowhere. The image was shot a few weeks before McQueen's suicide, but Bailey said she could think of no better tribute to him.

_William Klein's portraits of designers, shot in 2007, his first fashion photographs in more than three decades. Bailey said the images captured the designers the way they chose to present themselves: Marc Jacobs practically having a party in the studio, Miuccia Prada all by herself, Karl Lagerfeld surrounded by his muses and the craftsmen who bring the vision to life, and Alber Elbaz with his entire staff, from the company president to the cleaner, doing a little dance.

_Naomi Campbell's stunning 2009 "Wild Things" spread by Jean Paul Goode, especially the supermodel wearing a Blumarine cheetah-print dress outrunning a cheetah. "When those pictures arrived on my desk, it was fashion heaven," Bailey says. "I can't remember ever being speechless but I was."

_The animated characters of "The Simpsons" taking a tour of Paris in 2007 with Linda Evangelista as their tour guide. Marge met Lagerfeld, Jacobs, Elbaz, Donatella Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.

"Marc Jacobs loved his illustration so much, he had his made as a tattoo on his arm," reports Bailey.

_Top models Amber Valletta, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Shalom Harlow, Kristen McMenamy and Nadja Auermann posing without makeup for Peter Lindbergh in 2007. The women ? all in their 30s and 40s ? showed they were embracing their looks and age, Bailey says.

The gallery is still one of the most popular features on the Bazaar website.

"When people talk about Bazaar, they talk about a fun, fashionable, feel-good fashion magazine. They know we have a sense of humor," says Bailey, "but I think we're also renowned for our ideas."

_The all-important September issue of 2009, which was going to press earlier that summer when news came of Michael Jackson's death. Bailey went into action and had Agyness Deyn dress up in Jackson's signature style in a red leather jacket, cropped black pants and military jackets. The next month the magazine scored an interview with Janet Jackson.

"When Michael Jackson passed away, a lot of people wanted to talk to her. It was a sign of us being able to move quickly," the editor says.

_Features that presented fashion as part of pop culture, incorporating art, music and movies. Over the years, Bazaar has paid homage to filmmakers Mike Nichols, Tim Burton and Pedro Almodovar.

In one photo, Lagerfeld and Almodovar, guns in hand, recreate a scene from "Live Flesh."

_Kate Winslet's "exquisite" white strapless gown by Ralph Lauren, peeled straight from the runway for a cover shoot in 2009. She stood on what looks like rooftop scaffolding high above Manhattan. "In reality, she's not that high off the ground, but it looks like she's risking life and limb, and that's what you want from a fashion magazine. You want to dream. You want to be aspirational and uplifting ? literally in this particular case," says Bailey.

She adds, "So often with celebs you see them doing the same thing time and time again. That seems dated. I want to see them in a new light. I'm buying a fashion magazine because I want to see the relevance of the time I live and I also want to see what's coming next."

Include pets in your disaster plan ? Health & Fitness ? Bangor ...

LOS ANGELES ? A poll released Tuesday by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found that 35 percent of dog and cat owners have no plan for dealing with their pets during a disaster that forces them to evacuate.

Forty-two percent of dog or cat owners polled in the survey said they would not evacuate without their pets, 39 percent said they would leave them behind and 19 percent said they didn?t know what they would do.

The finding underscores something emergency management officials learned during Hurricane Katrina six years ago in New Orleans: Some pet owners won?t evacuate in an emergency if it means leaving their animals behind, while others may be forced to abandon pets.

While Hurricane Irene has come and gone, September is disaster preparedness month, and with hurricane season running through November, the ASPCA is urging pet owners to identify a place in advance where they could bring their animals if they had to evacuate in an emergency. The organization also advocates microchipping pets as the best way to make sure owners can be tracked down if their animals get lost.

New Yorkers hunkering down for Irene this past weekend were lucky: The city permitted evacuees to bring pets with them to designated shelters. And the transit system, which normally only allows service dogs or pets in carriers to ride buses and trains, allowed leashed dogs onboard as a way of encouraging reluctant pet owners in flood zones to leave.

As a result, said Tim Rickey, the ASPCA?s senior director of field investigations and response team, several hundred pets were brought to New York?s shelters, which had crates and animal care teams to accommodate them.

In Joplin, Mo., after the tornado in May killed 160 people, the ASPCA took 1,300 lost or abandoned dogs and cats into an emergency animal shelter. Fewer than 5 percent of those animals were microchipped, said Rickey.

Only 500 of the Joplin pets were reunited with their owners. The rest were placed with new owners in a massive adopt-a-thon that drew 5,700 people from 24 states.

The ASPCA poll found that nationally, only 28 percent of dog owners and 24 percent of cat owners say their pets have embedded microchips. In addition, according to the survey, 21 percent of dog owners and 46 percent of cat owners say their animals don?t have any form of identification that is on them all the time.

The survey, conducted for the ASPCA by Lake Research Partners between July 30 and Aug. 4, involved landline and cell phone interviews with 1,005 pet owners nationwide. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Rickey, who has led pet recovery efforts for hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike, and floods, ice storms and wildfires, said animals at the Joplin shelter included animals that were rescued, animals found as strays and pets dropped off by owners who couldn?t keep them because they?d lost their homes. Some pets were so scared they had to be trapped by Rickey?s crews.

Rickey has three horses, four goats, 17 chickens, four dogs, two cats, a wife and two daughters at home in St. Clair, Mo., and even though it requires a horse trailer, they have an evacuation plan that includes the whole bunch.

He urges pet owners to ?always evacuate with your pets. If it?s not safe for you to stay, it?s probably not safe for your pet.? And you never know if you will be gone for two hours or two weeks, he added.

Of course, while hurricanes are usually forecast in advance, tornados leave little time for people to take shelter ? with or without their pets. In Joplin, when the sirens went off, people were lucky if they had time to grab family members and pets and huddle in a closet.

Virginia Anderson, 95, lost everything in the tornado but a couple of cabinets full of glass collectibles that were somehow protected by a wall that didn?t blow away with the rest of her house. But she couldn?t find the two things that meant the most to her ? her cats, Pretty Kitty, 12, and Lucky, 5.

She moved in with friend and former daughter-in-law, Pauletta Daniels, on the other side of town. Three days later, Pretty Kitty turned up fine in what was left of a closet at Anderson?s home. And two weeks later, Daniels found Lucky at the ASPCA shelter. Like every other pet sent home or adopted from the shelter, he got a microchip before leaving.

Wildlife Conservation Society applauds regulation to limit lead in Argentina's environment

The Wildlife Conservation Society applauds the government of Santa Fe Province for taking steps to reduce the amount of lead ammunition used in hunting of waterfowl, the first such action of its kind in Argentina.

Enacted for this year's hunting season, the regulation requires hunters to reduce usage of lead shot by 25 percent. The regulation initiates a process that may lead to the eventual ban of lead shot. Lead is known to cause severe adverse effects on the health of animals and humans and permanently pollute the environment.

"This is a huge step forward," said Dr. Marcela Uhart of the Wildlife Conservation Society, the principal investigator in a project that is analyzing the impact of lead on native waterfowl and other wildlife in the Santa Fe Province. "We commend the government of Santa Fe for acting on the preliminary results of our study. This is the first such regulation in the country and, hopefully, it will serve as a model for other provinces to emulate."

Dr. Uhart's project examines the density of lead ammunition pellets in ducks' stomachs and wetlands where hunting occurs. Further, the study examines the damage of lead ammunition to other wildlife and to human health. So far, the research team has collected blood samples from 24 live ducks and tissue samples from about 300 ducks killed by hunters, as well as water, vegetation, and soil samples from areas with and without hunting activity. As expected, preliminary results have shown significant levels of lead in the gizzards, blood, and bones of tested ducks.

The study is conducted in collaboration with Universidad Nacional del Litoral, Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, and Universidad Nacional del Sur.

The new regulation specifies that hunters must reduce the amount of lead shot cartridges by 25 percent when hunting rosy-billed pochards, fulvous whistling ducks, white-faced whistling ducks, and other species. It also enforces restrictions on the use of lead shot in the hunting of terrestrial bird species such as the eared dove, shiny cowbird, and chestnut-capped blackbird.

"The government of Santa Fe has set an admirable precedent in the reduction of lead ammunition in the province's hunting grounds, a move that will benefit the region's people and wildlife," said Dr. Robert Cook, Executive Vice President and General Director of WCS's Living Institutions. "We encourage other states and stakeholders to adopt the same process."

Landon Swank on America's Got Talent

The Kinetic King - The second time was the charm for The Kinetic King. The best part about watching him was the hope that he'd mess up again. He claimed that he had a new "gadget." He ditched the backup dancers permanently and forced everyone to wear goggles. There was ping pong balls and candy flying everywhere. The whole routine was shorter than before, but visually epic. My Grade: B+

Fatally Unique - The small town dance crew is now against the West Springfield Dance Team that has professional choreographers. The opening was similar to WSDT with the insane dancers. Unfortunately, the gate didn't correctly close for them and it was distracting. I liked the improvement in the theme. The lifts were a bit sloppy, but the transition into faster music was interesting. After not being a fan of West Springfield, I prefer WSDT more. My Grade: B

Landon Swank - There's something endearing that Landon worked with his father to create his next act and even help him. This time he decided to do Russian Roulette, which we technically saw in the Las Vegas round with Frank Miles. The judges picked a button to explode Landon. It's sadistic if the trick went wrong. Of course, Landon was safe. My Grade: A

Gymkana - Gymkana pointed out that they are more of a school team that doesn't perform on stages, so the biggest challenge was adding oomph. Instead of ladders, the teams now had Zuma Zuma's chairs. The flipping was redundant, but the chair tricks were flawless. The flips took too long until the ring of fire. Someone tripped and the ring of fire almost engulfed a Gymkana member. They clearly didn't get to finish their routine even though everyone was fine. My Grade: D+

Summerwind Skippers - The Sexy Skippers had a horrible mistake that was commended instead of being reprimanded. They also got the memo to have a "dark" instead of happy routine. The basic skipping in the beginning had decent choreography, but wasn't anything special. The group had a very interesting group double Dutch section. Then they messed up again. My Grade: C-

Snap Boogie - Snap tried a routine this time that had a bit of class in the beginning, but I'm not sure if it connected as well as it could have. The transition to the “Boogie Wonderland” was better except that I feared for the background dancers on the platforms on wheels. His visuals were great and his tricks were fun. His final flip looked like a flop, but he managed to save it. My Grade: B+

Anna Graceman - Anna claimed to put another twist on a song, but she’s been inconsistent. Anna's lower-end of her vocals is not strong and during the chorus of "Home Sweet Home" it showed the most flaws. Her high end, on the other hand, was strong and had soul. Her vocal runs were nice as well. My Grade: A-

Steven Retchless - Steven was intimidated by Zuma Zuma and changed his routine. Steven had a really cool air-walking section but I'm iffy on the extras. His routine wasn't as engaging as his previous ones. I liked the use of the scaffolding and the insane split at the end. My Grade: B+

Smage Brothers Riding Show - It turns out that the whole Smage clan was filled with motorcyclists. All of the family and grandma helped out. I didn't like the sleeping person opening, but I liked the uni-motorcycle and the thin ramp. The routine felt disjointed. I have to commend the whole family for getting involved. There was a minor mistake near the end, but it was covered up by the final flip that worked perfectly. My Grade: A

Professor Splash - Professor Splash was going for a 70 foot dive where there was less padding this time around and this time was fire on top of water. The fire was a bit less dramatic than I hoped. His descent looked less centered, like his previous tricks. There wasn't the drama of the kiddy pool, but it was still interesting. My Grade: B

Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. - Black Sinatra chose another Sinatra classic with more dancers and saxophonists on the side. There's something pitchy about his opening, but when the full arrangement kicked in Landau gained confidence. The dancers weren't distracting and I liked how he tried to prove that he could make a Vegas show by crooning. My Grade: A-

Silhouettes - There are more video elements and props this time. I appreciated the opening because it wasn't the same screen. It looked cool except the projection of the tree might have been misinterpreted as the group making the shape. I liked the combination of the spinning prop plus color of the map when they got to the screen. I had no clue what words they were trying to make, but the performance was a great improvement from the national monuments. My Grade: A-

After fielding complaints, O'Connor lifted her ban on Brians and Nigels, encouraging them to apply, along with lesbians, who will "also be very much considered." As for her sexual preference, the singer details rather explicitly that she would perform anal sex.
