AIKEN, S.C. -- This September will mark the eleventh anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
"I remember watching the coverage on the television. I really couldn't believe what was happening. I know a lot of folks after that wanted to join the military and the armed forces just so they could help the country fight against the evil we were facing at the time," said Jason B. Hucks, funeral director at the Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home in Aiken.
The day before this Sept. 11, Hucks' funeral home will do something special.
"Well, we really want to let the families reach out to those servicemen and women that are serving out of the area," he said.
Hucks says on Sept. 10, family of service members can come to the Pine Log Road location of Shellhouse and record a special message to their loved ones stationed across the country or even serving overseas.
"We just want to give them a chance to see what they've got back here at home, what they fighting for, and just kind of get them over the hump and give them a reason to come on back home," Hucks said.
Shellhouse helped stream the funerals of Master Public Safety Officer Scott Richardson and Master Cpl. Sandy Rogers live over the Web. Now, Hucks says they hope to do more with this live technology. His first big project will be this one.
"And we're not limiting it to any particular number of family members. You can bring in as many as you'd like, and they can all sit down and, you know, send a personal message to that person," Hucks added.
He says it's like having a professional studio at your command. When a family records their video message, their soldier can watch it live or they can send him or her a link to it instead.
"Tell the person that's not here how much you love them," Hucks said.
Hucks says he doesn't know any other places offering a service like this around here, and he says if it's successful, he'll probably do it again during the holidays.
